Football is a strange old place.

Takes great pride in coming together for a good cause, but tens of thousands of people think nothing of throwing dogs abuse at players every week.

Probably should blame his parents

Fair play to him, after all he had to put up with, he seems to have grown into a very decent person.

Unfortunately footballers have to deal with banter from opposing supporters during matches. It's part of the game. Much about anything goes and is said in the heat of the warfare from the terraces.

However for the likes of (esp. BBC) presenters and pundits such as Lineker, as part of their £multi-million a year, gravy train roles, to as good as condone and confirm these taunts, is a bit out of order.

However, there were/still are, plenty of skeleton's in Lineker's cupboard that Chadwick could have fired back at him through the media... if he wanted to go that low. Allegedly.

That speaks volumes about both of them as people

At the end of the day the man’s got a premier league winners medal. One more than everybody on this forum, everybody in the stands and also in gerrards trophy cabinet.

He scored at Elland Road, He also has a Premier League winners medal as well, Not bad for someone who had his looks mocked.

Keith Allen did an interview years ago... Can't remember off the top of my head if it was fourfourtwo or one of the lads mags like Loaded... But it was about travelling round with the England squad in italia 90 after being involved with the World in Motion song

He said Lineker was an absolute tw@t. His account was some of the squad had very little respect for Bobby Robson and Lineker was the worst by far, openly mocking him when Robson was speaking to the squad

The media didn't help. If memory serves, they always used the most unflattering images they could find in the papers back then.

‘Banter’

I remember the outrage that was caused when Frankie Boyle had a go at Rebecca Adlington on Mock the Week. Of course had she been a male, like Luke Chadwick, it would be seen as fair game no doubt.

This is actually quite sad.

Exactly the same thrown out by fans of all clubs at the likes of Luis Suarez and Mesut Ozil. You're in the public eye and you're going to get satirised because of that.

posted on 16/5/20

It's feckin' pathetic, when you read about the pointless abuse he received. It clearly would have held him back mentally and you'd want to almost be out of that environment as quickly as possible.

Without going into victim blaming, I'm surprised he didn't aim to get his teeth sorted, which many players, most notably Ronaldo when you saw he had wires all in his teeth once he arrived to us.

Difference with those two were the fact that they were world class players, they were admired for their skill in the game. Luke Chadwick didn't really have that.

Look at Phil Jones, we've spent more time talking about his face than his football.

My armchair personality analysis for Lineker I think you can tell he’s quite a witty and borderline confident/arrogant person. Type of guy who always wants to be the leader in a conversation. His offspring and even his brother are all similar.

Would they have received the amount of abuse about their looks off the pitch too? I don't think you can say it's exactly the same thing without knowing that. For one thing they're foreign footballers plying their trade here and some would say they haven't helped themselves with their actions.

I don't think footballing ability matters all that much. As said before, this guy has one more premier League medal than 99.9% of people will ever achieve.

I think it must be incredibly hard, but such things happen in any way of life where you are thrown into the public eye. It's no different for politicians, actors, musicians etc. Part and parcel of the profession.

Could quite imagine Lineker being a total nobhead, so I suspect he’s not wrong. I think he has done well to cultivate a media friendly image but wouldn’t be at all surprised if behind it he’s an arrrsehole.

His personality has everything to be being a leading media figure. He has charisma, is confident/arrogant and witty.

It’s horrible but fair play to the guy for getting through it. There’s a certain poster on here that a few throw insults at, hopefully they learn from this.

Would recommend listening to the Peter Crouch podcast.

It’s funny, but there’s a part where he talks about the abuse he took at the start of his career and even his Dad getting involved with people shouting stuff at him.

It’s not good enough to call it banter, or say that it’s just part of the game.

It’s idiots who use football to behave in a way that would never be accepted in normal society and families at games shouldn’t have to listen to it.

posted on 16/5/20

Was a very different Lineker back then
He himself was subjected to years of abuse of his own looks on that show as all part of the banter....all that stuff was the norm
Sad story about Chadwick tho, glad he’s come out the other side and making the most of things
