Nope.

I love this country and who are you to say I don't just because I think Brexit is, was and will be an absolute 5hitshow?
The Government lies to our faces on border custom checks WITHIN OUR OWN COUNTRY but that's okay.

Surely the people with the bleakest opinions of our country, post-Brexit, must be more optimistic that we can get through whatever is thrown at us?
——————

Sadly, I fear the opposite. Brexit will be even harder because of the economic fallout of Covid-19, and it will be difficult to see or to assess just how damaging Brexit has been. In this sense, the pandemic is a perfect scapegoat.

I could be wrong, of course.

Great point Clockwork!

I haven't spent a great time considering it. Knew the academics on here would give some great balanced opinions

Always value your opinion as well Hector, I've seen you have some great debates on this topic.

Government definitely lie to our faces, but they've been doing that for years about all kinds of issues. Not that two wrongs make a right

Covid is the best thing that could have happened for Brexit. Now the two are mixed with each other and it will be hard to tell the true impact of Brexit and separate it from that of Covid.

posted on 20/5/20

Every Government since time began has lied. It's very simple. Do what is right for you and your loved ones. I don't need anyone to stand in front of a lectern at 5pm each day to tell me what to do. I know what I need to do and I do it.

If we all take responsibility within our own circumstances and do the right thing, then we will definitely get through this

Sorry if I bit at the "people with the bleakest opinions of our country" bit. I hate being labelled unpatriotic or whatever just because I wanted us to Remain and thrive.

I've dealt with the fact we've left (kind of) and whilst not cheerleading it, I hope for the best outcome, I don't want us to be less than we were and agree with Mr Clockwork, Brexit + C19 could really hurt us economically and the services we like that we might not any longer be able to afford.

After Covid-19, very difficult to assess what the effect of Brexit will be. You can't just add two perceived negatives together to make a bigger negative. For example, a theoretical blow to exports to Europe due to Brexit may be insignificant anyway if Covid-19 means we're not actually producing those exports.

A Remainer myself, I accept that the majority wants to leave, and leave means not being subject to EU laws and regulations. Which as things stand with the EU's negotiators, probably means no deal.

Not ideal, but probably not the disaster some claim. At least we're being spared the accusations and counter-accusations which would be front-page if it wasn't for Covid-19.

Interesting article OP. However, linked in it is this slightly depressing news, if you care about food quality:

https://www.foodmanufacture.co.uk/Article/2020/05/13/Agriculture-Bill-MPs-don-t-back-import-standards-call

I don't see how a pandemic is going to make Brexit better. It's not 'scaremongering' that it would turn people against each other - that has already happened. Regardless, it doesn't matter if we all think it's great if the government does a bad job of it. And if the pandemic taught us anything, that seems to be the most likely scenario.

We are heading for a double recession from a highly potential no deal, the likes we haven’t seen in our lifetime, and this guy thinks everything is getting rosy with Brexit ffs

posted on 20/5/20

The government have made living here hostile for immigrants, they’ve voted to lower the food imports we get into this country, and they downright lied to our faces about their being a border down the Irish Sea that could raise tensions about the future of NI in the Union.

ALL IN THE NAME OF BREXIT!

I just realise that sounds rather scathing, I meant how difficult life would be post-brexit.

I find myself in the middle of the road, surely the best place, some stuff I wish we kept, other things not so much.

But yes, getting behind the push against whatever is in front of us is the only way forward now.

I am saying Covid seems to have put Brexit into a different light and if we all pull together, we may just be able to get through Covid and then with that same spirit we can get through Brexit.

But you go ahead.

By getting through do you mean the rise of possible mental health cases from the millions of people that will be facing unemployment? Both because of the virus and Brexit.

Or the fact we’ve had our rights stripped away from freely travelling across the continent and in the same manner made it even more hostile and unwelcoming for immigrants to come here?

There’s absolutely feck all to look forward to.

What does that mean to you? Are you saying that socially it needn't be a big disruption, or that somehow the government will do a better job because of Covid?

posted on 20/5/20

I think the earlier post summed it up perfectly. CoVid will be used as the reason for any Economic ills that are now experienced in an attempt to sugar coat brexit. However I think the social and political Impact will still be felt and seen very separately, not least the likely break up of the Union, which today’s news, IMO, only speeds up (although it will still be a good few years).

No not the politicians, I expect they will act the same as they don't make big decisions anyway, I suspect.

Socially it may pull people together as we forget the political puppet show that drives wedges between the public.

This appeal to unity, regarding Brexit, is so flawed. The whole bloody fiasco has caused a division in this country unseen for generations. This war time rhetoric is just bullshiiiiiit.

Do you have family? I know the answer, but you get my point, come on man.

Mental Health and nothing to look forward to, kind of go hand in hand, so not wise to be splurging histrionics across the internet if you're worried about the spread of the disease.

I agree on the divide Brexit has created, but hopefully Covid makes us see that is all ballacks.

Judging some of the looks on walks though, when I'm swinging a four pack along side me, maybe not.

I don't do that really.
