He's either got the compromising photos of all the cabinet that are supporting him or the cabinet are 100% reliant on his strategy to Get Brexit Done.
He won't leave of his own volition he's too arrogant to admit fault, Johnson will need to pop out from his fridge and sack him.

Isn’t the fact he’s just an advisor the issue though?

I’m not defending him in any way whatsoever but he’s not a member of government and can’t be sacked. He can’t resign from a post he holds.

All that can happen is the government (Johnson) can refuse him access to meetings and dispel his services.

So the question is will the government refuse his advice which they clearly value?
