He's clearly good enough for England.

Not according to the manager.

I think Southgate has more of a personality issue with Grealish than an ability one.

Southgate’s reasoning was that he was competing for a spot on the wing, even though he can play centrally. Which is fine, and Sancho, Rashford and Sterling are strong options, but he was picking CHO instead of him, despite being a vastly inferior player to Grealish.

If Winks and Rice are our only two options then we're weaker in that position than I thought.

There is also Eric Dier...

The midfield is tragic.

There always seems to be one glaringly weak area in the squad. It never seems to be more evenly balanced.

I think we’ve got a few right now. Keeper, central midfield, central defence and left back are lacking quality.

Right back and our attack is where we’ve got some genuine class and depth.

I don't think those areas are quite as problematic as the midfield.

It's desperately poor in terms of quality and short of conventional midfielders.

I don’t think the difference is a lot, to be honest.

We’re going to need our attack to be on form at the Euros as we really struggle to keep decent teams out.

Problem is they’re all more attacking players. Our issue is in central and defensive midfield. I’m not sold on Declan Dier.

At United I think Garner is a promising young midfielder, but he’s a long way off being an England international yet.

Bellingham is meant to be very highly rated, so we’ll have to see what happens with him, but beyond that it’s looking pretty thin in terms of potential young cm’s/dm’s.

Lewis Cook was looking promising for Bournemouth before doing is acl. Will be interesting to see how he does once he returns.

Kalvin Phillips

I think central midfield is very important for us given our attack and defence. It doesn’t provide great protection for a weak defence and we struggle to get the attackers in the right positions, regularly, when we have the ball.

Ben White? I know he’s played some games in midfield but he’s a cb. That’s why Phillips is the one I’m looking forward to seeing in the prem, he could really help us progress the ball and give us some control in the middle.

That will likely be the case again next summer. Southgate always wants two deeper lying midfielders.

A year is a long time in football anyway, we may be having a different conversation in a year.

Plus our midfield will probably change depending on who we face in the second round, Portugal, Germany and France all represent a different challenge.

We should be fine to top the group however we set it up in the group stages, given it’s a fairly weak group and we are at home.

Declan Rice is the Basmati Busquets.

That's the issue with all of the younger generation. It's unlikely they're going to be competition ready by next summer or more unlikely that Southgate takes a gamble on any of them so we're going to be stuck with the same set of mundane options.

Using Grealish centrally and a bit deeper would help England progress the ball better but it doesn't seem like that'll happen.

On a brighter note it appears there are plenty of Championship clubs willing to take Garner on loan next season.

Basmati Busquets

Yeah that’s the problem. We’ll see what happens with Phillips next season, though.

A loan to the championship would be good for him. Needs to be playing regular games.

I think people are putting players like Rice, Winks & Henderson in midfield because it adds balance to the side. The central areas are not the strongest, both in defence and in midfield...so you might as well protect the centre with workhorses and use your strength out wide.

Southgate would do well to let Trent control the play like he does for Liverpool.

Play to your strengths and protect your weaknesses.

Its also a case of going with what Southgate has been.

I think it’s pretty fair for Southgate to pick players based on how they perform for the national team and not about how in form they are. Especially as international football is very different stylistically to club football, which is why the likes of Trippier looks like a world beater internationally but poor at club level. Except for the GK position which I think form plays a big factor which is why Hendo/Pope should come in for Pickford. My team at current would be:

Hendo
TAA Gomez Maguire Chilwell
Hendo Winks ???
Sterling Kane Rashford

I think I want the third spot to be Barkley for now, mainly based on how good he is for England

Who to take for the right back position is a tricky one. We're quite loaded in that area with AWB, TAA, Walker and Trippier. TAA is the stand out, but someone has to miss out.
