How can you sack someone that’s not employed?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
what's the point then
Ah yeah.. must read the article .. risk of getting injured, is entirely different to feeling unsafe due to covid..
Yeah injury is part and parcel.. players would of trained by themselves all through this surely, if anything their bodies would be more recovered by now. I know there’s a gulf of difference being ‘match fit’ but I wouldn’t of thought pro athletes who’s diets are impeccable would be that far away

Am I missing something here? Risk of getting injured is all part of football - sounds like these players are ducking their responsibilities and disrespecting their club and its fans.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Was thinking exactly the same
Could argue they are not having a preseason so therefore the chances of picking up an injury due to not being eased in, preseason including friendlies. I can understand the players concerns.
It's up to the fitness guys to prepare the squad so the risk of injury is minimal. World of difference between Leeds and Charlton.
Also who wouldn't want to play in a promotion winning squad (hopefully).

What do you mean?
At the end of the day the onus is on the club. None of you have anything to do with it. It likely concerns a club for which you clearly have no context.
These sorts of issues were always going to come with a restart at this point.
Bowyer said he'd play but he doesn't feel he'd be at his best as he was being concerned about getting injured.
Given the championship starts on June 20th and his contract is up on the 30th that seems perfectly reasonable to me. Would only play 2 games anyway.

It’s not down to fitness, training, or covid.
It’s just a player that’s out of contract and doesn’t want to sign a 2 month extension because it will risk the chances of him getting a big 3 year contract at another club to see out his career. He doesn’t want to risk getting a long term injury that means no clubs signs him when out of contract and by the time he’s fit again, having not had a club and a whole season out, will he even get another contract? If he does it’s not going to be worth anything like what he will get this summer.
It’s a decision based on ensuring his family have a good home to live in.
I would want him to show loyalty to the club. And I’m sure he wants to too. But can’t afford to take the risk.

exactly why put yourself and your future at risk to play a couple of games before your contract ends. Somehow think no one else on here would risk it either. In our case quite a few of the loans could do the same as could berardi but they have a reason to stay. why stay at charlton for a relegation battle and maybe lose your career
Maybe it just me.
But If I had offered these players a contract for next season, it be getting withdrawn now.

That happens every season at every club, loads of played out of contract
The players will/should be insured.
You’d have to pretty scu mmy to just walk away and not help the club you’ve played for and the fans.

But in reality it’s probably the other way round. The contact will get withdrawn if they extend theirs with their current club.
I think it’s wrong that they are not sticking around for the fans and their team mates. But I do completely understand why they are making their decision.
I’ll bet gaetano Berardi will be 100% ready to play

exactly. Lyle Taylor is on the brink of a move to Rangers, by far and away the biggest club he's played for, as he has spent most of his career in league one or below. If he signs on for 3 more weeks at Charlton, then Rangers might just turn their attention to someone they don't have to wait for. We don't know tht behind the scenes information so it's too difficult to judge.
I get the point entirely about players not wanting to get injured now in the 9 games left and be left with no job.
However look it this way. Would you sign such a player for your club? For me as a manager it would be asking questions about their desire. Maybe by not playing a manager out their won’t sign them?
I doubt he has earned a fantastic amount so far in his career. He will have had a good wage compared to the average man. But he will have to find alternative employment once his career is over.
Neither Solly nor Taylor will be earning much. They have spent their careers in lower league sides, and are currently at a club in such a knife-edge financial position that they may not actually be able to pay these players an extension.
For the record, the third player named is David Davis, who is on loan at Charlton from Birmingham, and who Charlton fans that I have seen seem to be fairly glad they have gotten rid of.

Berardi needs to be playing, pretty much known he will be out of the door come the end of the season, if he doesn't show up he has no chance of signing a new deal and he also has to give himself the opportunity of putting himself in the shop window.
The guys refusing to play will need to way up all the pros and cons.
This kind of thing isn't restricted to the current situation - there are examples just prior to most transfer windows.
I've seen it on both sides - both club and player protecting their futures.
Player's contract running down, big-money interest from another club -- all of a sudden the club don't want to play the player and risk losing a big payday or the player makes it known that he doesn't want to put 100% into a possible career-wrecking few games and so is dropped.
Nothing special in this circumstance, at least as far as this goes.

It's not quite the same either. Because normally the player would still be under contract to play for the club right up to the point when the big move can happen. In this situation the player no longer has a contract to play. They are not breaking a contract because there isn't one.
