The other big disaster looming is the delayed treatment and diagnosis for other illnesses.
Cancer patients in particular.
The effects of this pandemic are going to be long lasting.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I’d like to know if other countries round Europe have done this too. The only reason we did is because of the austerity affects inflicted on the NHS for an entire decade. We had no ability to juggle Covid patients and other illnesses at the same time.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It has happened here as well

There was a thread about this the other day Winston. Anecdotally, it seems that (some) cancer patients are continuing to get treatment. I'd guess that the bigger impact is going to be felt later on - in the form of late diagnosis. There's a bigger squeeze on lower priority cases (someone who has a symptom that ought to be checked out < someone who needs life-saving treatment) and in addition, there's a lot of people not going to their GP at the moment, either due to real/perceived lack of access or because they want to steer clear of places where they may catch the virus.

Agreed, it's more than just a lack of resource.
But will be devastating nevertheless.
Today's numbers worryingly high.
Trying to be optimistic about the situation but struggling to view this as anything other than flatlining of deaths.
I suppose infections and hospital admissions are falling, so hopefully this is just a blip.

Unfortunately RR I think you are giving the general public way too much credit.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I don't think I am. I think Johnson/Cummings had a rather more cynical view of the British population than has borne out in reality. Most people want to stay alive, and most people want to keep their loved ones and their neighbours alive. Once we understand the risks of the pandemic, the vast majority of us follow the lockdown rules.
I think it's instructive that the government was taken by surprise by the level of outrage over the Cummings Durham story. That ideological wing, broadly libertarian, tends to think of communitarian rules as things to be done away with. Cummings and Johnson have certainly made a career of skirting around rules of public life. The reason why so many people were so angry about Cummings was that we did make those sacrifices - we did put the greater good before our personal frustration at being locked away, unable to see our loved ones, often unable to grieve together.
Of course these things are never universal. But the streets in the main were empty.
Aside from that argument, whatever the challenges of maintaining public cooperation with the strategy, you need to be clear and consistent in what you communicate, and maintain public trust in your message. The government has failed on both of those points.
Maybe a lock down is the best way to solve the racism virus tok. Lock all the fascists and racists in their homes, empty out all the food, turn off their water and dont open it up for 6 months

Until a vaccine is available, deaths will continue and spikes will occur.
We cant lock people up for the next 12 -18 months.
Lets see what happens in the next year, the total swedish deaths may work out better compared to their neighbors as their figures will be toploaded with more deaths now and less in a few months due to the herd immunity.
Still too much unknown and a long way to go.

i dont understand why people are shocked about lies... politicians make a living out of it.
they lie to get into power, and then lie when they are in regardless of which party you choose to vote for.
as i said before, yes mistakes have been made, but lets be honest, regardless of who was in charge mistakes would have happened and lives would have been lost.
the british public really didnt help the situation either.
ive seen gatherings myself during the lockdown period and you only have to watch the news to see the mass gatherings that have taken place over the weekend despite social distancing.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That’s a cop out Dink. So politicians lie and everyone makes mistakes.. how many people need to die from these mistakes before the government is held accountable?

its not a kop out mate, unfortunately it is what it is.
could lives have been saved? of course they could have and in an ideal world there would have been no deaths, but this whole pandemic has caught the world out, not just the British Government.

Going back to the OP, it may be a good thing in the long term that Sweden took the approach it did. I suspect their government looked at their geography, climate, population density and diversity.
When this is over and we hopefully do get the true figures from all countries, then detailed analysis can be done. Having different countries tackling it in different ways will be invaluable against further future pandemics. We can take the good bits from the different approaches and discard the terrible mistakes that have obviously been made. Future generations will then be able to tackle such viruses much better in the future.

Oh I agree entirely.
I just don't know whether we can hold the government solely responsible for that.

Some are privately run (and we know the Tories love a bit of privatisation, less regulation, lower standards etc) but they still have contracts with the NHS and are subject to some government guidelines.
