What is Kim t know is why something like that was put up there in the first place - I’ve never heard of the guy?
Did he do other notable things in his life that were commendable?
Personally, I wouldn’t want the statue of a ‘slave trader’ out up anywhere, but surely he must have been recognised for something more that being a slave trader? 🤔

My source is a mate who knows one of the organisers who is a face at spurs
Tearing down a statue of someone, who whilst did some positive things for his local community, was also a slave trader is slightly unpalatable given the manner in which it was done (how many years have these people had the chance to petition the council to have it properly removed) but throwing it into the Avon sums up these uttercunts - just anarchistic skum with no genuine affiliation with the actual cause, let alone any respect for each other’s health or the environment.
If people felt so strongly, they should have come together, formed a group and peacefully demonstrated to the Council & MP’s to get he the statue taken down in a proper manner - there’s just no excuse for vandals to take the law into their own hands

I understand this statue has been controversial for many years now, and that there have been campaigns to have it removed.
That would have been the right way to do it - I believe having it taken down through reasoned opinions being expressed, listened to and respected through the system would have been a far more powerful statement than it being torn down in an act of anger and vandalism. After all, the former would be a sign of exactly the progress that the protesters want, whereas the latter is symbolically a victory for mob justice - and therefore no justice.
I understand the anger, as I do the mixed reaction to the statue - he was a generous philanthropist, but at great and terrible cost to other people. But I think this actually represents an opportunity lost in a way.
As for defacing a statue of Churchill or trying to burn a flag at the Cenotaph, acts like that will serve only to hurt and regress the cause.

I think moving it to a museum would have been the right compromise, where it can be discussed in context rather than deified as a prominent statue. As I say, I think the BLM protest would have been a great and symbolic opportunity to do this... if it hadn't already been pulled down and hurled in the river.
Protesting peacefully is fine and a right for those in democratic societies.
Violent protesters should be thrown in jail especially if it is they that incite the violence initially.

That is bollx and just a pitiful excuse of doing your own thing when you sonny get you own way - look at Mandela, Gandhi, their protests when on for decades Befor the wheels of justice started moving

Though not all of his wealth came from the slave trade, still he effectively traded Black lives for the betterment of White lives during his lifetime. Not sure the numerous charitable contributions he made really clean his slate tbh.
Whether he really was a warmonger or not, defacing Churchill’s statue is seriously uncool, not to mention stupid.
His, and our, greatest hour was in helping defeat one of the very things these people are protesting against.
