For me, a winger would typically stay close to the touchline, go outside the fullback and whip the ball in with his stronger foot. You could say James sometimes does that for us. But he's often more effective on the left, though right-footed, as he can cut inside etc - that's more the modern sort of wide forward.
I still often call speedy wide attacking players "wingers", but that's probably because I'm a bit old-fashioned. I agree with Robbing that you tend to associate wingers with 442, a (sadly) dying formation.
