everyone knows and accepts lingard is useless
but mata always gets a pass from utd. Yes, he is clever but simply does not offer enough. He has offered less than 10 goals and assists in the each of the last epl seasons. Apart from goals and assists what else does he offer? Simply not good enough even to play against the team bottom of the epl table
he will probably now score an hattrick

our player retention decisions are almost as poor as our new signing decisions - new 3 year contract for mata, new 5 year one for jones, neither has offered the club much of interest for 3-5 years now.
