After all the 1st time winners, thought Day would finally win one but he was denied by Hawkins in the World Grand Prix, back in the top 16

Rankers for Robertson, great story for Carter at the World Open, Fu at the Scottish Open, Bingham kept his number 2 position for most of the season and won the Welsh, Murphy briefly back in the top 4 after winning Gibraltar

Judd had another good season, beat Ronnie in the final of the European Open and won the Player Championship which is based on the 1 year ranking. Judd was in the top 4 all season

Ding is back in the top 4 by winning in Shanghai and another impressive World Championship where he beat Ronnie in their 1st ever 3 session match, but lost again to Selby, this time in the semis

Higgins who usually prefers rankers, this time won many 3 non-rankers including the Champion of Champions, however very consistent season and reached the World Final again, back at World Number 2

Ronnie had his worst season for years, lost finals to Judd, Higgins, the UK Final to Selby and down to the lower end of the top 16, however he retained the Masters for the 1st time beating surprise finalist Joe Perry, this meant he now had the all time record of 7 for the Masters and thoroughly deserved after so many close finals.

Selby had the best season of his career, won 5 Ranking Events, won the International, won the UK Title and Won the Worlds again after having the tough half of the draw and making another massive comeback in the final, this time against Higgins. He is now number 1 by a country mile.

I don't like Slowby either, but he's a top, top player

Yes, I'm not a fan of Selby being a great, but you can't deny the results he has got. Sometimes he has been Number 1 due to the tournaments he enters, but in other seasons (especially 2016/17) he is clearly the best player.

One thing I like is he has embraced the way he plays and hasn't tried to play like Ronnie or Judd, he knows his strengths. Also, he is fantastic under pressure.

I'm not a fan of when he gets so slow, much slower than normal, but that's what makes good rivalries. Differences in styles.

Above are the rankings for the 2017/18 season

posted on 15/9/20

First Time Ranking Winners:
Ryan Day won Riga and then added Gibraltar too, a bit of an anti-climax to end up winning those but his deserved at least one ranking title and Day is back into the Top 16

Luca Brecel after showing lots of promise won his 1st Ranking Title, beat Ronnie on the way and beat Murphy in the final. Brecel also into the top 16

Michael Georgiou won the shootout, it remains to be seen whether he will build on this victory, but unfortunately it seems like he will be mentioned along the likes of Bob Chaperon and Tony Jones. Still has time on his side though

2017/2018 I think Ronnie won 5 ranking titles so that was his best season in terms of number of titles in a season. He clinched the Shanghai Masters, English Open, UK Championship, World Grand Prix and Players Championship. Shaun Murphy beat him in the Champions of champions final. Judd Trump won just the 1 ranking event European Masters. Mark Williams rolled back the years to clinch the world title.

Yes exactly, Shaun Murphy started the season really well, he he got to quite a few finals, beat Ronnie in the Final of the Champion of Champions and also got to the UK Final and lost. His season fell away a little after that.

In the same UK Championship, Neil Robertson fell out of the top 16 and didn't qualify for the Masters, how he did beat Cao Yupeng in a close final of the Scottish Open straight after he dropped out of the top 16

Mark Allen won his 1st Triple Crown Event by winning the Masters beat Ronnie and Higgins on the way and beating Kyren in the final.

posted on 15/9/20

Both Ding and Judd stayed in the top 4 for most of the season and both won a ranker each the World Open and European Masters respectively, but still dropped out of the top 4 at the end of the season

posted on 15/9/20

Mark Selby seemed like had a quiet season as he went out early in many tournaments and lost in the 1st Round of the Worlds to Joe Perry, but still he picked up 2 ranking titles and kept his Number 1 ranking, but the gap is now nowhere near as high as the previous season

In 2017, we saw many older players come back and start winning big tournaments. In tennis, Federer won 2 Grand Slams, Nadal won the other 2. In Darts, Phil Taylor won the World Matchplay.

We were not seeing it in Snooker until the 2nd half of the year.

John Higgins won the Indian Open, at this point (early in he had won more ranking events than Ronnie O Sullivan. He also overtook Steve Davis to win his 29th Ranker. He added the Welsh Open to get to 30. He reached another World Final and narrowly lost the final. Even though he won 2 rankers, he dropped from 2 to 4, but still a very impressive season.

Ronnie started the season as World Number 14, he finally overtook Steve Davis and got his 29th Ranker by winning the English Open and beat many young guns, Lisowski, McGill and Kyren. Won the Shanghai Masters with the tough draw of Williams, Higgins and Judd. Beat Murphy in the final to win the UK Championship equalling Steve Davis 6 World Titles and also equalling Stephen Hendry's 18 majors. Won the World Grand Prix and the Players Championship for the first time to make it 5 rankers in a season. The season ended in disappointment by losing in the 2nd Round to Carter, but Ronnie did jump from 14 to 2 in the rankings.

Mark Williams started the season even lower at Number 16 and wasn't even at the 2017 World Championship. He denied Yan Bingtao becoming the youngest ever ranking event winner by winning the NI Open, won the German Masters beating Judd in the semis and Dott in the Final. Won the World Title by beating Higgins 18-16 to win his 3rd World Title (all by the same scoreline). This was his 1st Triple Crown Title since 2003. Williams jumped from 16 to 3 in the rankings and the top 4 now included Higgins, Ronnie and Williams.

First Time Ranking Winners
Jimmy Robertson win the European Masters, not sure I've ever seen Jimmy reach the latter stages, so this was a surprise. It was a best of 17 final, so a proper ranker.

Thepchaiya Uh Nooh won the shootout, exciting player in his element at the shootout, he has become more consistent since this win, so it seems to have given him confidence

Matthew Selt wins the Indian Open. I was a bit skeptical about this, but to be fair he has been a top 20 player. Still not convinced, but his results are slightly better recently

Quite a few finalists that didn't win tournaments:

Higgins lost in the China Championship and the World Final for the 3rd year in a row and lost his place in the top 4

David Gilbert lost in the World Open and the German Masters, but did get into the top 16 after an impressive World Championship run to the semis beating Mark Williams and Kyren Wilson

Jack Lisowski lost in Riga, China and also lost the Championship League final to Martin Gould, but he's another that broke into the top 16

posted on 16/9/20

Selby did start the season well, winning the China Championship but his season fell away and after a disappointing previous season, his lack of ranking points finally caught up with him, lost in the 2nd Round of the Worlds to Gary Wilson, he not only lost his number 1 spot, but ended up at number 6 by the end of the season

Another player that started the season well was Mark Allen. He won the International Championship, was finalist at the UK and won the Scottish Open to end a fantastic 2018 for him, but the 2nd half of the season didn't live up to the 1st. Back into the top 8 though

Neil Robertson had a fantastic season. Won 3 rankers (Riga, Welsh, China Open) and reached 6 finals, looked one of the favourites for the Worlds but was ousted by Higgins in the quarters. Back in the top 4.

Kyren Wilson also had a good season, won 2 rankers and reached the final of the Champion of Champions. Now a consistent top 10 player, one of the very few young players to be improving each season.

Bingham quietly went about his business again and won the English Open where it looked like Mark Davis might break his duck, he also reached 2 more finals and won his 2nd ranking event of the season in Gibraltar

posted on 16/9/20

Ronnie started the season winning 2 non-ranking events, the Shanghai and Champion of Champions and even though he got a 147 in the English Open and won a tense semi final 6-5 against Selby, he lost the final of the NI Open and no ranking victory. He then talked about a breakaway tour during the UK Championship but stayed focused and won his 7th UK Title breaking Steve Davis' record and won his 19th Triple Crown Event breaking Hendry's record. This was also the 1st time he had successfully defended the UK Title. However another final loss to Judd followed at the Masters. He retained the Players Championship Trophy beating Higgins, Allen and Robertson and got his 1000th Century in the final. He then played in the newly introduced Tour Championship and won a nervy semi against Judd 10-9 before winning the final, his 36th Ranking win equalling Hendry and getting back to World Number 1. However, he flopped again at the Worlds losing in the 1st Round in arguably the worst loss of his career. Still, he ended the season as World Number for the 1st time since 2009.

Mark Williams followed his 2018 World Title by winning the World Open and getting to World Number 2. However, the rest of the season was steady rather than spectacular and he lost to Gilbert in the 2nd Round of the Worlds. Still ended the season as World Number 3

When the 2018/19 season started, Judd Trump had only won 1 major back in 2011 and many questioned whether he would ever win the Worlds after a disappointing QF loss to Higggins. He started the season ok winning the NI Open, then won the Masters for the very 1st time beating Ronnie in both finals. He then won the World Grand Prix, beating Carter in the final and Selby along the way. Got a tough draw at the Worlds by getting Thep in the 1st Round and Ding in the 2nd, got through those 2 and then cruised to the final. Once he got to the final, he put in possibly the best performance ever in a World Final dismantling Higgins who he had lost to 8 years before. The score 18-9. Judd was now finally World Champion and ended the season World Number 2.

posted on 16/9/20

By doing the above, Judd also completed the Triple Crown.

posted on 16/9/20

Judd winning the Northern Ireland Open in November 2018 seemed to be a turning point in his career so far.

posted on 16/9/20

Yes I think it was the Masters win that was crucial. A lot of people were thinking another major for Ronnie, but Judd beat him easily, didn't show any signs of nerves or being intimidated, then the same happened in the World Final too against Higgins.

Ok, Quiz Time (more for Ronnie fans sorry)

Since 1993, name the only calendar year that Ronnie O Sullivan did NOT win a Professional Title?

posted on 16/9/20

Tough one, it was early in his career, I will pluck 1998 out of my head..

posted on 16/9/20

No sorry, not 1998

1998 Ronnie won the Scottish Open I think, beat Higgins in the final in his back yard. I was hoping Ronnie would repeat that and win the Worlds that year, but Higgins trounced him in the semi

posted on 16/9/20

It happened later in his career if that helps
