Thought Ronnie was superb in this years W/C, a very tough draw, Tepchia, Ding, Williams, Selby then the man who'd knocked out the world champion... Despatched Tepchia, had it tough to the final, then won the final easily.. After 2004 this is my second W/C win for Ronnie.. 👍

Excellent choices just true, obviously I remember them both clearly, I knew after that final in 1994 that Jimmy would never win it... 😭

Yes, I think Jimmy showed great character by getting to 2 more finals after 1992 and even to the semis in 1995. But yes, you just knew 1994 was his last chance, especially with a teenage Ronnie and Higgins coming through, I wasn't even aware of Williams at the time

Yes I've loved ALL his title to be honest

2001 - First World Title is always memorable, tense final too in the closing stages

2004 - He played his best that year IMO

2008 - This year was the most straightforward, but it was also the year he got the 147 and the World Title

2012 - He was the forgotten man, Selby and Robertson most consistent, Ding and Judd considered the future, even Mark Allen took his mantle as the bad boy. Suddenly he rolled back the years and won

2013 - He won this after taking a year out

2020 - Loads of comebacks and great character shown

But yes, I agree 2020 was his toughest draw (even though 2012 comes close)

2015/16 season summary:

Bingham stayed at World Number 2 all season despite only getting to one ranking final

That final in the World Grand Prix he lost to Shaun Murphy who got back into the top 4 by the end of the season

Another who got back into the top 4 at the end of the season was Judd who won the China Open

Mark Allen who won the Players Championship was back into the top 10 as well as Ricky Walden who lost 2 finals

John Higgins won his biggest title for years (The International Champ) and also won in Australia, so he was back in the top 10 too

2 players won their first rankers this season, Martin Gould won the German Masters and Kyen Wilson won in Shanghai and ended up jumping 40 places to the top 16

Robertson like Ronnie the season before won the Champions of Champion and the UK Title and stayed in the top 4 for most of the season

Ronnie took the end of 2015 off and came back at the Masters in 2016, I never thought lightning would striker twice, but he ended up winning the Masters and equally Hendry's total of 6. He also won the Welsh Open where he refused a 147 and made a 146 instead. He beat Selby in both tournaments and also beat Robertson in the final of a ranker for the first time. Ronnie was actually undefeated for a while in 2016 but eventually lost in Championship League and the Grand Final lost to Judd 3-2. Another season fell away for Ronnie and he lost to Hawkins in the 2nd Round of the Worlds

Ding after being World Number 3 early in the season, dropped out of the top 16 and had to qualify for the World Championship, once he got there he beat Judd and Mark Williams on the way to his first final, he seemed destined to win it with all that happened, but ended up starting the final poorly and left himself too much to do in the end

Mark Selby spent all season as World Number 1 without winning a ranker, but again proved himself a big match player by winning the World Title on the same day as Leicester won the Premier League (Football)

So apparently here are the rules for the Championship league

128 Players
32 Groups of 4 Players
32 Group Winners go the 2nd stage

8 Groups of 4 Players in the 2nd stage
8 Group Winners of Stage 2 go to Stage 3

Stage 3 has 2 Groups of 4 Players
2 Group Winners of Stage 3 get to the Final

Final is best of 5

I think this is right, please correct me if I'm wrong

If you want a league, why would you want 128 players?

That's like all 4 divisions in football playing a league

posted on 14/9/20

Anyway, so far, Judd Trump and Ryan Day are through

posted on 14/9/20

Yes the championship league is too long and dull, not sure why they have decided to have all 128 players in it.

posted on 14/9/20

The only slight consolation is it’s still a better format than the previous years where you played millions of times and lost and then started another league and so on. You ended up with loads of chances to get to the winners league. This format is slightly less confusing.

This format is still bogus though, leagues should be about the elite, not the whole tour

The championship league has just gotten so irritating and boring lol. Having 3 in one calendar year is just stupid.

posted on 14/9/20

Oh wow, I didn’t realise they’ve had 3 this year, will this happen every year?

posted on 14/9/20

Naaaa it will only be this year.

ronnie makes a comment that williams lacked the big break building ability of higgins, hendry and selby because he lacked cue power (comment at 4,05)

thoughts lads

posted on 14/9/20

Mark Williams wasn't the sort of player that was blessed with the greatest cue power, he was very good at floating balls in though. Williams was also someone that wasn't bothered about making centuries, he would be content making a 70-80 break and getting on with the next frame. I'd say that's very risky these days as there are a fair few players in the game that always play on needing 4-5 snookers.

yeah good points

is there needle between ronnie and mark williams ?

posted on 14/9/20

I watched Mark Williams playing Higgins in the semi in 2000, he was 15-11 down I think and won 17-15, hit some outrageous shots. Didn’t have the same cue ball control as Ronnie, but kept himself going with great pots under pressure. He also could’ve got many centuries, but he would win the frame and then hit exhibition shots.

Ronnie in 2004 would do something similar, he would start playing left handed when the frame was over.

Both could’ve got a lot more centuries back then if they really felt like it.

Ronnie and Mark didn’t like each other that much in the early 2000s I think but that’s all behind them now. I think they get on pretty well now. They’ll never be best mates due to the rivalry, but I think they’re ok.

Great TV between the two best players ever, & it's a conversation that only those 2 & Steve Davis could have between themselves, I think Ronnie & Mark get on well nowadays, they are both mid 40's & have nothing to prove, but.. Of course they want to beat each other everytime they play.

Just an update on the Championship League, we now have 4 qualifiers:

Judd
Day
Milkins
Hawkins

I think it finishes like 7pm during the week which isn't really very good as this week I get back home from work at around 6pm so it means I don't really get to watch much of it. Although it's not a major loss but still lol.

posted on 14/9/20

Lol, yes I'm just following it online so far, last season the only snooker I watched was when Ding beat Ronnie in the UK, then I watched the Worlds

posted on 14/9/20

I've probably said this before, but this is the perfect time to play the Champion of Champions. All champs from last season play here, if more than 16 Champs, the Riga and Gilbraltar winners should play a qualification match.

If less than 16 winners, you can add highest ranked players, seniors, women, who cares. I just get confused when they do it in October/November. It would seem cleaner to have a Champion of Champions for one season as the 1st tournament next season.

2016/17 Season
Postives - Got rid of the awful PTCs, added Home Nations

Negatives - Events like Riga and Gibraltar became proper rankers, even the Shootout is now a ranker

posted on 15/9/20

First Time Ranking winners this season

Anthony McGill - Indian Open and The Shootout, not the most impressive collection, but looked a ranking winner with the way he plays

Liang Wenbo - English Open: After a few near misses, finally won a ranker by surprisingly beating Judd in the final and back in the top 16

Mark King Northern Ireland Open - Thought he missed his chance, but happy for him. One positive about having many rankers, at least the home nations feel like a proper ranker

Anthony Hamilton - German Masters: Even more happy for this former top 10 player. Beat Selby on the way and Carter in the final
