I found the comments from Ole, if true, to Ake about needing a left foited cb a bit odd as Maguire plays LCB and always has done.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
What's odd about having a left footed player for a left footed position as an option? Doesn't necessarily mean he'll be moving Maguire.

Could be for rotation, could be against certain teams and players. Always good to have options
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Can't see Ake going for that, he left Chelsea to get football. Hey, we need a left footed cb as cover doesn't quite have the same allure.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I think that if Ole did sign him then he would be looking at him as a regular starter.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Yeah that's what I mean. Maybe he'll move Maguire to RCB but Id find that odd given his history.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Do you think if we did sign him, Ole would finally be able to organise a defence?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Not sure sure, jury still very much out for me but the break has worked in Utds favour a lot imo.

Be interesting to see how he juggles four competitions next year because if it were not for the break and Europa had restarted with the injuries I think Utd would still be very much sixth.

Think it’s a matter of time now til the Sancho deal is done.

That story came from Christian Falk who is a reliable source in Germany and if Dortmund are making those sort of noises it sounds like they need to cash in.

reliable? the guy never failed to crack a case!

I'm curious as to what basis there is to suggest that Ole can't organise a defence?

Sometimes you have to hold your hands up and admit you made a mistake, surely.

Asking for too much perhaps.

But we have the third best defence in terms of goals conceded, and we've been away to City and won 2-1, Chelsea and won 2-0, and even Liverpool were only 1-0 up until deep into stoppage time - with a clean sheet at Wolves as well.

I appreciate there's more to it than simply goals conceded but I'd love to hear the case against at the moment, as when I watch us I think we look more solid than we have done in many years and recent months have shown that - despite claims to the contrary last year - the defence can stay solid whilst we have greater emphasis on attack.

Very happy with our attack, especially martial and greenwood as most of theirs have not been pens. Some of their goals have been incredible! Martial chip before lockdown was insane and his goal last game, and Greenwood’s finishes have top quality. Rashford has been very good but for me less impressive. Still very good and when sancho comes hopefully, it will be a rapid and dynamic and dangerous attack.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
If we do get Sancho it could be Rashford that comes under pressure.

He’s arguably technically the worst from that 4.

James Cooper on Jadon Sancho: "I don't think we're going to see a £100m transfer fee. There's going to be some money down, there might be players involved, there might be sell-ons or buy-ons, just to protect them and give Dortmund the kind of money they deserve." [sky]

Give them £50m plus Lingard, Pereira, Jones and Dalot

Give the guy a break. He’s learnt a thing or two on the job has our Ed, he’ll pay the original asking price.

We should pay Michael Edwards to act as a third party in the deal. He’s get £49m for Lingard on his own.

What would people prefer out of these scenarios for transfers:

Sancho & Grealish

Or

Grealish, CDM and CB

Sancho and Grealish. Our attack would be immense.

Sancho and Grealish.

We have got joint 3rd best defence in the league this season. That is largely down to the improvement we have seen since bringing in Bruno. There is much less stress put on the defence because we are actually making the ball stick further up the field. If not for De Gea's form it would be looking even better. So I don't think that there is dire need for a CDM or CB.

We will never know about the injuries, but I would add that we were 11 games unbeaten before the break. And that was with Rashford and Pogba both out.

1 goal and 2 assists says otherwise.

One of the worries with the defence is only have two cb’s that can stay fit. Hopefully we can pick up a cheap depth option.

Our attack has been a problem for a while. But if we add Grealish and Sancho to what we already have, all of a sudden we’ve got probably the best attacking options in the league after City.

-------------------------------------------

That's sort of damning with faint praise. You're saying the main reason why we've got the joint 3rd best defence is because our defenders have less defending to do.

I'm not disagreeing btw, it's true and improving the attack is obviously a good way of masking defensive issues and it's why a few of us wanted the midfield and attack improving last summer instead of the defence.

However, despite having conceded very few goals of late, I'm still not convinced that our defence is actually as good as some are making out. After the Burnley game we'd conceded 29 goals in 24 league games and kept just 4 clean sheets and it didn't look like our defence had improved from last season.

Now don't get me wrong, we're on an impressive run at the moment but I don't completely trust this defence to defend well and keep clean sheets when it really matters, in tighter games when we do struggle to break teams down and we need to win 1-0 or 2-1 and when we're under more pressure. We've played 52 games this season and we haven't got into double figures yet in terms of winning games by a single goal.
