Minutes wise Foden isn't far off Xavi and Iniesta at the same age. Messi too.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

And it wasn't until later that Xavi broke into the national side.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Iniesta even later, having just checked.

Xavi made his debut at 20, Foden is 20.

This isn't about making a debut, it's about whether he should be in the team at a major tournament.

His real breakthrough into the Spain team came the same year that he played virtually all league matches for Barca, as I understand it.

Iniesta's came the season after he'd played virtually all league games for the first time.

Xavi came into the side winning silver medal at the olympics but regardless there is precedent for a young wild card at a tournament with barely any international experience from proper Ronaldo to CR7.

England have a decent tradition with this too with Walcott, Owen and Rooney. Probably more if I cba to check.

Foden is technically superb, has won medals and scored in big games. Every single one of those players Ive listed above had played less football than Foden bar Xavi who was at a similar trajectory. He's ready.

thought Foden was younger than that considering his ability he really should have played more football than he has

There’s gonna be a lot of competition for the attacking midfield spots. Form at club level and how they do in the internationals is gonna have a big impact.

I don’t think Southgate is gonna completely disregard players that have served him well and helped get us to the tournament either. So don’t be surprised to see Barkley in the squad.

Foden, Greenwood and Saka are going to find it hard to force their way in, especially Saka.

I think Greenwood and Foden are unique talents in the England squad, and showing their ability to have an impact with limited game time may work in their favour - as impact players they could prove extremely valuable.

There’s gonna be some quality players that will be disappointed next summer. We’ve got a lot of options in attack.

You could just admit that those examples are actually not comparable of course.

Rooney is a better example but still was a regular in the Everton team the season he started playing in the England team as I recall, and further, he played plenty of qualifiers and friendlies before his first tournament I think.

Owen was a regular in Liverpool's team when we started playing for England.

Walcott was taken to the tournament and never used, wasn't he?

I don't think there's a great deal of precedent for it and generally, Southgate has steered away playing players who can't get a regular game for their club side - although not exclusively.

The idea that he'd suddenly start playing a kid who has never been a regular for his club side in a European Championship is a bit far fetched imo.

But of course, the delay to the EC means that hopefully we'll see him flourish in the City side and then it'll not even be a debate by the time summer comes round.

I think it's a good point about Foden and Greenwood as impact subs. Both got goals in them.

Ive always liked Barkley and wouldn't mind seeing him at 8 in a 433 with RLC and Hendo at 6.

That's quite a powerful midfield.

England potentially could be in a position where one of Rashford/Sancho/Sterling, Greenwood and Foden are all coming off the bench to try and get them a goal.

I’m not sure RLC will get in the squad. But if he does, again, I think it’ll be as an impact player. He lacks stamina so won’t be starting games for England or Chelsea.

Not a fan of Barkley, but he’s done well recently under Southgate. He also scores goals for us, and it’s a squad that lacks players that have scored many for England. Might be a reason Ox gets in as well, despite being average.

Yeah Barkley really does play at a different level for England. Good point.

Club form isn’t everything. Plenty of international teams over the years have shown that.

Foden will be easily start in the next tournament.

International football is more about control and technical ability in midfield. You need midfield players who can pass it between the lines. The only who can do that for England is Foden. The rest are all sideways passers.

Doesn't matter anyway. We will win our playoff and go on to lift the trophy at Wembley

That's not true. Mount, Grealish and Maddison are always looking to play the ball forward.

Sweden, Poland and Spain will be a tough group if you get there. Even with home advantage.

Dont think you need or want all of these - Foden, Mount, Grealish, Maddison. 3 out of 4 max. I'd add someone like Winks who can sit and hold and play the ball around.

Right now I'd still go with Walker but by next year i expect AWB will be in. Also wonder if Henderson will still have the legs by then. Probably not.

If Phillips can take well to the premier league I think he’ll push Winks out of the squad.
