Daniel Levy overrated?

Bale, Berbatov, Carrick and Modric for example. Real Madrid and Man United do not for a single second feel that they got ripped off. They ended up being crucial to title races.

didn't you have a £40mish offer from chelsea, but preferred to sell for £30mish to madrid?

levy seems to hang on for the last few pennies a bit too often, by all accounts you could have sold dier to jose's united for £40-50m, and i can assure you that we'd have definitely felt ripped off by that.

and carrick i will give you, but most united fans would say that berbatov was an expensive and unnecessary signing, and madrid fans probably do feel a little ripped off by bale (though admittedly more by his salary than transfer fee).

One of the few times I supported Levy was when he stood up to Chelsea and refused to sell Modric to them for I think £40m? I was ok with selling Modric in the end. It was a little on the low side but glad that he didn't go to a rival and went to Madrid instead.

Glad he went Madrid but still think we should got the £40/£45m for him from them

His reputation as Darth Levy is an absolute joke. Things get conveniently swept under the rug like the losses we made on players such as Vincent Jansen. Very poor at times to be honest. £30m for Sissoko on deadline day was just pathetic. Wijnaldum from Newcastle was £24m and imo the better player too.

Transfers are a difficult thing to judge managers/chairmen on as people tend to remember the ones that work well or badly and the ok ones are just forgotten.

After watching Soldado rip it up in Spain for several seasons I was delighted when we got him.

That went well.

We shouldn't forget Modric had a terrible start in Spain. Didn't he win an award for worst transfer in his first year? Still he very much had the last laugh.

I always thought the Prem was a bit physical for him and the extra time that the more technical game in Spain allowed him on the ball was perfect for him.

Levy's bad decisions last 2 years:

- No signings over a summer

- Miss out on Grealish

- Sell Dembele without a replacement

- Sacking Poch

- Bringing in Mourinho

- Amazon documentary

- Asking the government for money (or rather the timing of it)

- Missing out on Bruno Fernandes, this league's signing of the season

What else have I missed?

---------------------------------------------------------------------

I can go back even further....

Selling Berbatov and Keane ( arguably our greatest strike partnership in Prem history ) replacing with Frazier Campbell and Pavlyuchenko

Miss out on Moutinho last minute ( didn’t back AVB ) I know AVB was poor, but still didn’t back him

Never backs any manager with their preferred signings. Always back up alternatives

1 league cup in over 20 years under him

Guys a bald tight a** c**!!!! The bald fraud. #levyout #enicout

He should be applauded for delivering superb infrastructure, and asked to close the door on.his way out.

I disagree with a lot of sentiment in this article.

I think when it comes to dealings he is pretty good at selling players for a good price, just not great at buying players - but that should also be a DoF’s job (maybe he is bad not to recruit an effective DoF)
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Selling who? Players when they are at the top of their game.. look at the history and it's overrated. We've only sold about 5 players for more than £20m
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Sold for good fees regarding the time (I agree Modric was cheap but Carrick was good value for the time):
Trippier
Walker
Wimmer
Bentaleb
Mason
Pritchard
Stambouli
Livermore
Holtby
Bale
Caulker
Crouch
Palacios
Zokora
Berbatov
Keane
Carrick

All jump out as suns higher than the market average. Only players I think we definitely undersold on was VDV, Modric, Chadli, Townsend, Siggs and Bent.

Didn't he get £16m from Stoke for Wimmer?

This is exactly my point. Daniel Levy getting credit when chairmen are doing exactly the same thing. Look at Liverpool for example:

Benteke
Ings
Ibe
Solanke
Coutinho
Sakho

Off the top of my head but we don't get a "Darth Levy" equivalent from there. I could list players the same way for Chelsea too and many other teams except it's only our chairman that gets overrated with his ability to sell.

posted on 10/7/20

And why is selling Palacios for £8m even worth mentioning? or Holtby for £6m? Just fits into the narrative of trying to credit Levy for any okay deal

posted on 10/7/20

Levy made 1 excellent off field signing in VDV. Since then, some Spurs fans have embarrassingly classed him as “Darth Levy”. Theres nothing Dath about 1 league cup in over 20 years of his leadership.

I always thought they called him that because of his evil nature, like he's a villain or something. More an insult than a compliment.

I don’t and didn’t disagree though?I think Liverpool have been pretty exceptional regarding offloading some sheit for serious cash (Bournemouth are mugs).

I just think when it comes to selling players he is good, it’s his transfer ins that are poor.

Well yeh the obvious villain like persona, but he was considered like a Darth ( powerful like figure ) by some because the way he pulled Madrid’s pants down for VDV. Did that once and has this ridiculous reputation.

It's when he's called 'shrewd' that I have a problem, not that that's been said for a while now. There is nothing shrewd about panic buying Sissoko for £30m on the last day of the window, or missing out on Grealish or other players, or creating that mess with Baldini and AVB, or missing out on top 4 because you didn't back the manager enough in the transfer windows etc. etc.
