can't say i've ever paid particular attention to him when watching burnley, but at least, unlike mcginn, we won't be quoted £50m for him. and he'd come in on a modest wage, no huge signing on fee, lot of PL and international experience.

what specific role does he tend to play for burnley/ROI?

One of the best League One standard midfielders in the world for me at the moment if we get him or if we don't. Never heard of him.

Pretty decent guitarist back in the day, I think. Can't comment on his footballing credentials.

He is a bit of a utility man across midfield isn't he? Seen hi play centrally and on the right for Burnley. I can't really see this happening.

Taken from Wikipedia:

Style of play
Jeff can play anywhere across the midfield, I think he can play behind the strikers. Can he sit in and do a holding job? That's not outside his capability.
— Republic of Ireland manager Martin O'Neill on Hendrick's adaptability.[88]

Hendrick is known for being very hard-working, tactically aware and for his ability to pass the ball successfully.[89] He is capable of playing as a central midfielder, out wide on the right of midfield or as an attacking midfielder behind the striker.[89][90] His big strength is winning second balls from aerial duels and keeping the attack going in advanced positions.[89] Owing to his lack of proficiency in scoring goals, Hendrick's most frequent task is recycling possession high up the pitch to create chances for his teammates.[89]

If that's true it seems to fit in with Ole's desire to get hard working players. AC Milan were said to want him as well. It does seem underwhelming if true but if we are getting rid of Lingard, Mata, Pereira then getting in an experienced international for free isn't the worst idea. Liverpool did the same with Milner and he's done a great job for them.

Seems a strange one. Usually when a player is at Burnley for the length of his contract, l there’s a good reason for that.

I do remember him looking decent at a WC or euros? Rings a bell at least.

I remember him scoring an absolute screamer a couple of seasons ago; think it was a chest-and-volley goal from way out.

Not comparing them as players but Gary McAllister was at Coventry for four years after leaving Leeds before he joined Liverpool. It sometimes happens although it would be left-field.

Yeah it does happen, that was before clubs invested huge sums in scouting and club loyalty was a thing though.

It isn't like GM was as under the radar as Hendricks either. He was a well known name.

I don't know enough about Hendrick to be honest, just seems a weird one on paper. If we are in for Sancho though, we need some squad fillers and replacing the likes of Lingard, Mata, Periera with committed players who fit Ole's profile makes sense. I just worry about being lumbered with loads of journeymen again.

sign him up.

be nice if he brings his long, flowing locks with him too, i feel we've been missing that over the last few years, we've had quite a few afros, but they're different to the beckham/poborsky mane i'm thinking of.

Don't know enough about the fella to comment on him specifically but as a general comment I don't see this type of signing as a problem.

You need these kind of players, if any good, as back up. It's not sensible to think you can have say 2 Bruno's for a position one as back up. Doesn't happen

If we use Liverpool as the example then shaqiri type signings can really help a team during a season

As an Irishman I can safely say the guy is bang average and very poor in possession.

Non story anyway.

Maybe he is better for Burnley but for ROI he is bang average. Gives his all but doesn’t excel at anything.

Wouldn’t see any harm in signing him on a free but also wouldn’t see the point.

We’d be better off giving Garner game time or even TFM.

Milner covers this type of role well for Liverpool tbf. I doubt he's as good as Milner though, and certainly doesn't have his experience.

just had a quick look at this stats, his overall play does compare unfavourably to eg mctominay - though always tough to adjust for the team he plays for - and his pass success rate is c. 76%, below the scot at 80%, and pogba (viewed as someone who gives the ball away a lot) at 85%. fyi mcginn, playing for a worse team, is at 81%, grealish 85%, and dear old sean longstaff at 79%.

so he does seem to give the ball away a lot, yet without anywhere near the attacking output that would justify that.

still, that hair.

Only tabloid talk anyway so nothing to worry about.

Typical media. United have one bad result so we’ll link them with rubbish now so everyone on social media can comment and tag their United mates saying “oh how the mighty have fallen” or “this is your level now”

i don't think we want to associate ourselves with head and shoulders, given their current football-related advertising campaign.

So he's basically Saul Niguez minus the goals.

The person whose 'exclusive' this is got sacked by Goal. I think that says it all.

For ROI he is very average and I couldn't see any benefit in this signing for United

Sign him up Ed on at least 150k a week
