What about those strikers who’ve scored a lot of tap ins. Are they considered as WC ?

A striker’s judged by the number of goals he scores not the success of his club

i'd have thought aguero is possibly the clearest pick in the whole league, even this year, injury disrupted and in a poor title defence, he has by far the best goals to minutes ratio in the league.

a few years ago kane was probably an equally clear choice, not so sure today. but if we accept that world class means top 4ish in your position - ie we're putting together a world squad, and want 4 strikers, 4 CBs etc - then name me 4 better strikers in the world. i can give you lewandowski, mbappe, and neymar, and even some of those are debatable, but i can't get a 4th name. too soon for haaland, too late for suarez, no other names spring to mind.

Pedro is the only world class striker in the EPL cos of what he has won at international and CL level.

One of the definitions of being "world Class" is to be obviously ahead of anyone else in your position, and doing it for a sustained period of time ( not, as we keep seeing, being good for a few games and being labelled world class. )

So, for me, with the term "world Class" being chucked about like confetti these days, there are only two who clearly that fit this, Messi and Ronaldo.

All the above players mentioned are good, but are they head and shoulders above everyone else in their position ?

If that is your definition, then that would be world best rather than world class surely?

Aguero has to be one of the most prolific strikers ever in the PL. He was world class for a long while. Might of gone of the boil a bit these days, but he’s certainly a quality player.

On a par with the Shearers, Henry’s, Van Nistleroys.

If they score a lot of goals doing it, and they do it season after season then yes.

If scoring from lots of tap ins was easy then loads of strikers would be getting 20 league goals or more a season.

I would say it's debatable that Messi and Ronaldo belong to that elite 2 that are far better than anyone else, anymore. In terms of this era then yes, but presently no.

Interesting debate. I think the words "world class" are bandied about far too easily these days. A player has a good season or even a couple of good weeks and he's suddenly world class. For me, a world class player is on who could "easily" fit into any and every top team. Ronaldo, Messi - truly world class players.

Virgil Van Dijk is the only defender in the whole of the league who can stake a case imo. There are some other very good players but VVD is on course to be world class although maybe not quite there.

Alisson is the best keeper in the league I think but not sure he's as good as say Cech was at his peak.

Silva was definitely top class and de Bruyne is very very close. Aguero is also the only true world class striker in my view.

We have some really very good players in the league, Salah, Kane (the best English player), Kante - but are they really world class? I'm probably going to get slaughtered for not jumping onto the bandwagon but I just think it's reality.

Personally I choose to define world class as anyone who would get into the ‘world squad’ ie top 2 of any given position.

For example rewind a few years ago with Neuer & De Gea both were world class and it would be unfair to use starting world XI as one of them would miss out when they were clearly both world class.

I think using 2 is good for keeping it truly at world class level rather than top 5 in any given position.

I think Kane just as an example has to be considered world class. Golden Boot on 2 occasions and would have been more but for injury. 20 or more goals per season for the last 6 seasons, again barring the last 2 due to injury.

Quickest player to reach 20 CL goals. Look at the company he beats.

Golden Boot winner at the World Cup and 32 goals in 45 for England. A better strike rate for country than most.

20 CL goals by at age 26 doesn't sound that great.

Fair play though he did win the golden penalty so that's something.

I don't know what's funnier. the goalie, 3 of the back 4. Martial in midfield or Pogba.

Deary me Lordy be, anyone who doesn’t think Sergio Aguero is a world class striker must be on some seriously hard drugs

Been one of the best strikers in Europe for at least a decade
----------------------------------------------------------------------

european success? europa league 10 years ago with atletico. thats not enough.
International success? ziltch can we count the olympics really? has two runners up medals.

Aguero is class, we all know it but has he been just under the level or just not been lucky. Who knows.

As a forward its tough to compete with Messi and ronaldo for attention.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Lewandowski has one CL runners up medal and nothing at international level.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
who the F mentioned lewandowski chump?

If your definition of world class is ‘would start for every team in the world’ then that is probably only KDB surprisingly
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Name one team Van Dijk wouldn't be the best defender at.

Wouldn’t start for Real Madrid

My definition of world class is a bit broad. Anyone who could be considered/argued to be the top 5-6 in their position in the world, or any player who you could picture starting and being a key player for most of the top, elite teams in Europe.

I don’t really like the definition of world class being ‘whoever makes a world XI’ or ‘top 2 in each position’ as you could have three right-backs all performing at the same world class level but apparently only one or two can be world class by these definitions. Maybe I’m being over pedantic and others don’t take it that literally but hey this whole thread has basically turned into the classic debate of the ‘world class’ definition.

World class PL players:

City: Laporte, KDB, Aguero. Sterling, Ederson borderline
Liverpool: Allison, TAA, VVD, Robertson, Salah, Mane
Chelsea: Kante at his best but imo he has not been at his best since Conte.
Arsenal: Aubameyang
United: -
Spurs: Kane

To think we used to have three genuine world class players in the same team.
Happy days.
