I was just about the only one that called this. 270 plus, was never ever going to be enough. Poor really from Pakistan throwing that game away 2nd Innings.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

This is only the third time 200 plus has been chased down at Old Trafford Sandy
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Modern players though should always be able chase down scores under 300. West Indies chased down over 300 only a month or so back. Test matches tend to get played like one day stuff nowadays.

No they didn't. They chased 200 and that was thanks to a brilliant innings from Blackwood. They chased over 300 in 2017 when Braithwaite and Hope were brilliant. There aren't too many chases of over 250 because usually pitches start misbehaving and attacking fields can be set. Unlike one day cricket.

If Ali had kept attacking and asking Buttler and Woakes to hit boundaries then I don't think they would have done it. Once the field spread, they could score 1s and 2s for 12 or 13 overs to steadily bring the target down without too much pressure.

I don't really understand your obsession by saying modern players should be able to but can't. It's not as if history is loaded with high run chases. In fact, 6 if the top 10 run chases have come since 2003.

OK we will beg to differ then. But you will see bigger and bigger successful run chases in Test match cricket in the future.

There was a time when 220 was considered good in a 50 over match, now you need 300 and above as a minimum. With tail enders capable of putting together quick 50s any run chase up to 350 should not be out of reach.

Oh and nearly all the successful big run chases have come in the past 20 years or so. One day cricket has changed Test cricket for ever.

You may be right in that we will see a few more chases but by no means will teams fancy chasing scores over 250 let alone 300 especially when you've been bowled out for 200ish and then bowled your opponent out for 150ish. Day 4/5 pitches will also usually be a lot harder to bat on and you'll find you will need luck as well as skill to pull it off along with some poor and negative captaincy.

Stokes will miss the rest of the Test series for family reasons. All the best to him and his family.

Sandy is not interested in anyone else's point of view, he has his black or white narrative and that's as far as he can see, very narrow minded individual

......

Sandy is like a well known poster from our board who throws so much $hit at the wall eventually some will stick.

OT Test Match stats, England’s penchant for recent collapses and the earlier signs in this test and the series against the WI suggested Pakistan had too many runs for England to chase on a bowler friendly wicket.

We should have definitely won the 1st test now as we'd be in a decent position to clinch the series with Stokes being out.

Do you think Crawley comes in for Stokes?

Our batting is too fragile to win in England. Their batting is not strong point either but they have much bigger depth in batting than ours.

Crawley will come in for certain. I think Woakes will play the all rounder role at 7 again with Crawley at 3 and Root at 4. Curran will surely come in as well to give a bit more batting depth at 8 with Bess at 9. Broad and I wouldn't be surprised to see Wood come in although that will be quite a lot of changes.

England beat us without needing Stokes. Yes he got 2 late wickets but Woakes has always been a issue for us.

this

i would be tempted to load up on batting and play no front line spinner

no Stokes means we lose a batter and a fast bowler, really is two players. Woakes is good with the bat and proved himself, but hes still a bowler who can bat for me, not an all rounder.

Burns, Sibley, Crawley, Root, Lawrence, Pope, Buttler, Woakes, Broad, Archer/Wood, Anderson

Crawley will just come in and replace Stokes from the last side though. Anderson could be rotated out for Wood.
