VC called this earlier on and I agree, getting him off the wage bill was the priority

......

I also called it when I was very wary of his form with Arsenal but thought it was worth the risk getting him on a free.

No one at the time expected Ed to sign him to such an idiotic wage. No one.

Manchester United will not be receiving a transfer fee for Alexis Sanchez, reports Di Marzio.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That’s fine. We didn’t pay a fee for him either and we’re getting him off the books without having to pay him off it sounds.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Sanchez still cost us money. Mkhi wasn’t a free transfer.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Mkhi was so bad that getting his not inconsiderable wages off the books was no bad thing.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It was when we paid an even worse play double the amount.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

When you look back at it, it rather comical from us

There’s nothing surprising about Conte being a priiiick. He’s the Italian Mourinho.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Glad those linked stories to us in the past about him never came true.

One Mourinho was definately enough
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Might be worth it to hear him go in hard on Woodward in the press.

Mourinho, LVG and Moyes have been fairly coy on it. Conte wouldn’t hold back.

Hopefully he hangs around at Inter long enough to take more of our dross

I remember back in 2017 when Conte came out with this, and I really thought he was taking the pīss

Just get him on Skysports after he's sacked from Inter

Some poor decisions, but only with hindsight.
SAF had plenty of poor buys, all managers do if they are there long enough.

I don't know why the OP called him a virus.

Ed wanted to get him ahead of City. City were not willing to match what we offered otherwise he'd have gone there. He took the best deal on the table. It was a bad move for everyone involved in the deal. I don't have any animosity towards him. I wish him all the best, except against United.

I said as much in an earlier post. Utd screwed up signing a player on the decline for stupid wages. It is not sanchez fault he joined.

This reminds be of an article on here a few days ago about how many fans liketo villainize a player because it hasn't worked out without seeing it from the players point of view.

The squad at the time was Conte’s perfect squad. When you were linked with him I was actually worried, as Conte at his best, when he’s happy with his players, could easily turn you into title winners (even if his absolute insanity soon shows and he leaves in a big drama after 1-3 seasons).

Far from his perfect squad. It was one of the most unfit in the league, lacked the quality in the defence to play out from the back, with many of them being unsuited to a back 3/5 and didn’t have the right profile in midfield that Conte likes. He’d have to spend £300m plus to get it where he’d like it. Then have a paddy when Woodward inevitably facked things up. I’m so glad we didn’t get Conte. Would have been a disaster.

you are judging that squad by the logic of mere mortals like you and me. Those logic do not apply to Conte

I understand Inter taking the plunge.

He’s a winner. This is a guy who beat Messi in not one, but two, international championship finals. I think he could get Inter over the hump next season. Who knows?

But Conte’s clearly talking shiiiiit about it being the best squad in the league. He’s a very good coach, but there were clearly fundamental problems in that squad that would not suit Conte. Which is why he’s spend a fortune fixing it - buying a lot of average players in the process - before having a meltdown. The players would have hated him as well. They quite clearly didn’t respond well to Mourinho’s hardline management. They’re soft.

Tbf I think it was around the time you got Oke I was thinking ‘Conte would really suit your squad’ - not in 2017

He wouldn’t have then either. We still had the same problems. But even more so given Valencia was finished.
