Smalling

Strange he’s coming back, I thought Roma could get him for a pretty reasonable fee, maybe Covid has changed things.

I like Mike but I just don’t think Ole rates him. Probably best to just get the best deal we can for him, I’d imagine there will be interest.

Ole just confirmed that he is happy that Smalling is back . Of course this could translate to if you want to sign him you need to pay up.

In terms of Koulibaly I don’t think anyone is paying big for him at his age.

Our best out and out defender imo. However we need to scrap playing from the back (which I hate anyway) if we are to play Smalling regularly

I’ve always liked him. Got a lot of unfair stick at United.

I’ve had numerous arguments with people about this. The lad is a good player.

I'm not that sure he fits how we currently play... Whether you rate them or not, Maguire and Lindelof both maraud forward when they get a chance and don't flap if they are played the ball near their own goal. Smalling just isn't that player at all.

If he is backup and a plan B type, that it makes some sense, but I think he will be sold this summer still.

Nervous with the ball played to him
Assured off it.

When you look back with hindsight, the key players Ole got rid of, Smalling, Lukaku, Sanchez and Fellaini, they simple don't fit the type of football that got us top 3.

If he remains at the club, he'll be a squad player. He doesn't even really fit into the 3-5-2 we favoured against the rival clubs.

should never have been allowed to go.

More ability and intelligence as an EPL defender than lindelof, rojo, and bailly combined.

The treatment of him (and lukaku) is as much an indicator of United's loss of direction (post SAF) as both their 'transfers in' policy and, what can only be described as, their 'retaining deadbeats for too long' policy.

I would give Smalling a go next to Maguire.

We need to be moving on some CBs.

You will get no arguments about utds loss of direction post saf and gill.

Regarding lukaku he wanted to go which was plain to see from his sizeable body language last season. Smalling chose to go out on loan nobody dragged him onto the plane to Italy

Still think he’ll be sold. If not, there’s a possibility of another loan I think.

Regardless, Ole won’t be starting him ahead of Lindelof.

I am a fan of his despite his flaws and like I said in the article yesterday I rate him more than any any of our current cbs including slabhead

smalling looks superawkward in possesion but rarely makes mistake, slab head looks better when there is no pressure on him under a little pressure you see he is not the superb ball playing cb we were supposedly getting

Nah stick to playing it from the back, lumping it to our forwards will be pointless. We won’t retain the ball
----------------------------------------------------------------------
cbs should not be dallying on the ball,
they should move the ball on and very quickly to the holding midfielders in front of them

I've always admired the way IAmMe boldly enters the fray, shoots from the hip, and immediately legs it so he doesn't have to read the rebuttals of his ridiculous views.

Our best defender and does the most important job, defend first.

Brilliant isn’t it?

He's a bit "handsy" at corners, free kicks with holding, beds to watch that with VAR, other than that he's a better defender than Lindelof imo

Haven't seen him play for Roma but how can a player who is described as weak playing out from the back supposedly excel in a league were defenders are accomplished at doing just that

Since his arrival Roma have used route 1 tactics....

Is there any reason Roma haven't taken up the option to buy? By the sounds of it he did great there and is available for a good price.

BREAKING NEWS

Manchester United midfielder Angel Gomes has signed for Lille.

‪The 19-year-old rejected an offer of a new deal at Old Trafford and will immediately go out on loan to Boavista after joining the Ligue 1 side.

Bit weird to sign for another team then go out on loan. Pretty sure he could have done that here.

Could it be that the state of defending over there has got a lot worse so Smalling stands out as looking good, when really he's no better than he was at United?

I mean when you look at some of the top goal scorers and how many they've scored there in the past decade or so. Definitely seems like the defensive quality that Serie A used to be known for has dropped significantly.

Now one of your lot has piped up that reminds me. Smalling would be your best defender if you were to sign him. 20m would be a steal for you lot
