and one thing people still seem to be overlooking is the lower top tax rates currently in italy, which means that inter can pay him a lot less than united and he still ends up with the same amount in his pocket.

Having less than half the total amount as a lump sum gives him the chance to earn more than half the total amount through interest and investments. So he is actually as well/better off. Plus he signs a new deal that is 1 year longer than his existing deal - thus guaranteeing even more money. And he gets to play regular football.
