Never mind attracting top players. Can you keep Kane?

Spurs have no problem keeping their best players. Arsenal are the club that can never hold onto their best.

Wages need to be capped, not just in the PL but right across the World. This needs intervention from both FIFA & UEFA to bring in new rules.

No club should be spending anymore than 38% of their turnover on wages. Some clubs last year were paying wages equal to around 80% of revenue. Totally unsustainable going forward.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Leagues One and Two just voted in favour of a wage cap.

In the modern game, attracting players is, unfortunately all about wages and not if you are in the CL.

Yeah, I agree there a a few clubs with "reputation" but they are usually good payers anyway. Like Real or Barcelona.

The clear evidence here is that a club like Utd can consistently attract players even when they are not in the CL, which they ahve not always been in recent years, simply because they pay inflated wages,

So to conclude Spurs fail on all three counts....pay rubbish wages, are not in the CL and have some reputation, but no where near the likes of Real.

Gonna be a long transfer window ( again )

I'll perhaps just leave you with this thought.

You wanted a top centre half and you bought Sanchez.

Do you think he was the first choice pick or do you think that because he'd sign on a third of the salary of VVD or Maguire, that was the main reason for the choice?

You know what, the way this has gone is really irritating.

So many threads about Spurs underperforming, I have always defended the club and said what a great job they've done on the budget they have and that ultimately, it's unfair to compare them to Liverpool, for example.

I've no idea why you guys have taken offence here - absolutely ridiculous.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Sanchez was bought as an up and coming replacement for 2 at the time very established CB's (Verts and Toby) so not a like for like comparison. Absolutely nothing to do with wages
----------------------------------------------------------------------

So you think signing a 21 year old on those sorts of wages was genuinely the first choice option for the club at that point?

And you don't think that the Spurs wage structure limits the types of players that you have brought in?

I would say a lot of the transfers you've made have been limited precisely for that reason... the likes of Soldado, for example.

It makes it harder to get right.

Yes

No you are right about this

Fair enough, maybe I've got it wrong on Sanchez.

I just felt that it came at a time when Poch was developing the team and it seemed to me to be a signing that said 'I need a new centre half but I haven't got the budget for anyone better than this'.

Sanchez wasn't really a need though, we had Toby and Jan at the peak of their powers and Dier had his best ever season for us that year playing as a CB. Sanchez was just the kind of signing we make, we saw that young talented player with plenty of upside was available and we went and got him. It's like how it didn't feel like we needed Bergwijn in January but he was available so we went and did it

Fair enough, I think perhaps I'm wrong and have just remembered it incorrectly. Bad example then!

But generally speaking it does seem that Spurs mostly buy players at that medium level - not cheap but also not top drawer.

People criticise Poch for his transfer record but when you look at it from a wages perspective, you can start to appreciate why he had a lower hit rate imo.

I'd say the best example of this is us signing sissoko the same summer you signed pogba

A lot of our signings feel like we're just trying to do an impression of a big club

Yeh, and the Mane one... if true?

I feel for Spurs fans.

So many times people talk about how they're not winning trophies etc. but when you compare budgets, it's really not a surprise.

Just watched the Lyon v Juve game.
Juve are out of the CL and Sarri will be gone as a consequence.
Pochettino will take over next season at Juve!
Lets see if he attracts Spurs prized possession...... Harry Kane!

Kane won't go to a one team pub league Ted, and Poch won't be the nanager anyway. Stop scaremongering, and start actually supporting the team. I don't think I have actually seen a post where you get behind Spurs positively.
