Phil Hay reckons it is all but done;

PHIL HAYS MAILBAG:

BIELSA'S CONTRACT, BEN WHITE'S FUTURE AND MOVE FOR BENRAHMA.

The Premier League season is coming, Leeds United’s first since 2004. A holiday spent basking in promotion is almost over. The club attended the division’s AGM on Thursday and training begins next week. They are waiting for the fixture list now, poised to start in five weeks’ time.

There is much to sort out at Elland Road, though, and plenty to be done before Leeds engage Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and the Manchester duo. We wanted to know what was on your mind and asked you to submit questions for our mailbag. Here are the answers to the best of them…

When do you expect Marcelo Bielsa to sign? (Alexandra M and many, many others)

Let’s get down to brass tacks with this one because it’s evidently the burning issue for everyone. My understanding is that Leeds and Bielsa are essentially agreed on the terms of an extension for next season. Unless something goes wrong over the weekend, the contract should be finalised and put in place before the players resume training on Wednesday. The length of time taken to get this done shouldn’t be a surprise. Neither of his previous contract negotiations with Leeds were quick and both Bielsa’s deal and his expectations can be complex. But Leeds are confident and his camp are confident. The bottom line: the club cannot afford for this process to fail and they know that.

Have Leeds inquired about Ben White? (Jim A)

Yes, but so far Brighton have been less than encouraging. They maintain that they don’t want to sell White but he’s a major priority for Leeds in this window. As we’ve all seen, he fits Bielsa’s system perfectly and he has the makings of an elite, top-class centre-back. White is due to return to training with Brighton shortly and that’s when the picture around him should become clearer. His salary is a mile below the prominent first-team defenders at Albion and the club will have to address that if they want to keep him happy. Their offers so far haven’t been successful.

What I thought was quite telling was Brighton’s owner, Tony Bloom, admitting to us a few days ago they have an “abundance of centre-backs”,which implied that they have too many. Something tells me Leeds wouldn’t be wasting time with this if they thought a deal for White was dead in the water. And ultimately, what does White want? Bielsa and Leeds have been very good for him.

If we don’t get White, who do you see as the club’s “back-up” option? (Ashley P)

One player who was mentioned to me this week was 18-year-old Taylor Harwood-Bellis at Manchester City, although I can’t say if Leeds would actually go for him. In our sensible transfers piece, we picked out two defenders at Swansea this season — Ben Wilmot and Ben Cabagno — as options whose attributes on paper draw reasonable comparisons to White’s. But when you speak to Leeds, they’re only talking about White. They’re going to try to make that happen.

Watkins, Benrahma, Eze, Harry Wilson, Buendia. What have you got for us Phil, my lad? (Oliver M)

Leeds would love to take Said Benrahma and are very much in the fight for that one. But it’s apparent that they won’t be the only club going for him. Watkins has a lot of the right strengths and the club have asked about Emi Buendia at Norwich, although the indication I’m getting is that they’d prefer other players before him (Benrahma for example). Harry Wilson is an interesting case. He’s been very highly rated by Leeds (and Victor Orta especially) for a while and he’s always on the list of possibles. With Wilson, it would depend on price and what Liverpool intend to do with him. One to watch, possibly.

I’ve asked this question week after week — what realistic four players would you sign if we go up? Well now we are, let’s have an answer ? 😂 (Gary S)

Benrahma, straight up. There’s so much potential there. I’d take Callum Wilson from Bournemouth too. Naturally, you’d want Ben White. And Ryan Sessegnon from Spurs.

Have the club gone cold on Che Adams or is he still an option? (Shay C)

It’s not so much a case of going cold. It’s more of a case of Adams being firmly in the picture at Southampton. As it stands he’s not available.

I’m in the camp that thinks Casilla’s contract means he is staying (and as shown by the Derby game). Bielsa will be OK with playing him (but not as No 1). However, if I’m wrong, who do you see coming in as competition for our still young French goalie? (Michael G)

We’re waiting to find out with Casilla. It was interesting that Bielsa decided to use him at Derby because it suggested that, in his mind, Casilla is not necessarily done. But I still think there’s a chance he’ll go. Casilla’s reputation has taken a big hit in England. I know that Leeds have long been interested in Emiliano Martinez but sadly he’s flavour of the month at Arsenal. They’ve also looked at Angus Gunn (Southampton) before and that was a name which cropped up again last week. Whatever happens, there’s a very good chance Illan Meslier will start as No 1.

Is it just me that REALLY doesn’t want a big-money striker like Cavani or Ibrahimovic? (Oliver D)

Those were never going to happen. Financially they make no sense but more to the point, they don’t fit with Bielsa’s squad. He likes his players to be low-key, low on ego and low maintenance. Cavani was just Radrizzani thinking out loud.

Are you expecting Bamford to start as No 9 for the opening game? My guess is Bielsa will give him a go regardless of who’s signed. Can only think that’s a mistake. We need to take all our chances in the Prem. (Calum N)

Bamford probably will start. I don’t, in all honesty, expect the line-up on the first day of the Premier League season to deviate much from Bielsa’s preferred line-up this season. You’re right about chances and xG but Bielsa’s faith in Bamford has paid off so far. Bamford’s been part of a team who won the league by 10 points. Bielsa likes to be loyal and there’s something to be said for that.

Who in your opinion is the next breakthrough star to come out of the under-23s/academy? Has Poveda or Struijk convinced enough? (Patrick H)

Struijk has been the find of the past few months. He’s a centre-back by trade but he did a very good job of replacing Kalvin Phillips in defensive midfield for the last couple of games. Poveda has had a healthy spell too, certainly in Bielsa’s eyes. They’re both in the picture. I always hear good things said about Stuart McKinstry — and look out for Leeds’ new signing Charlie Allen, a striker from Linfield. He’s only 16 but people can’t speak highly enough of him.

Is the hold-up with the new kit to do with the new sponsorship deal or at Adidas’ end? (Ben H)

This has been second to Bielsa’s contract in the list of most-asked questions. Where’s the kit? It’s coming, basically. At least one photoshoot has been done with the players and the five-year deal with Adidas has been announced but Leeds are still in the process of finalising fresh sponsorship agreements and the kit won’t be released or put on sale until those are in place (for example, a new brand is set to replace 32Red on the front of the kit). You know how it is these days — a main sponsor, a secondary sponsor, a sleeve sponsor, etc. There are countless opportunities to exploit. And the value of them increases dramatically in the Premier League so Leeds will want to get these contracts right.

Are we getting a new badge or has that been scrapped? (Andrew L)

Nothing has been said about that for a long, long time. I’m not expecting a new one for the coming season.

Is it still possible QSI will invest at some point? (Paul B)

The QSI link has been odd. It’s clear that there’s a relationship between Andrea Radrizzani and Nasser Al-Khelaifi but for all the talk, it doesn’t go anywhere. QSI has never done due diligence or made a concerted effort to buy in — and whenever you talk to Leeds about it, they always say that further investment from the San Francisco 49ers is far more realistic. That was borne out a couple of weeks ago by Paraag Marathe (one of the 49ers’ executives) admitting that the NFL franchise would like to increase its minority stake. What I can’t envisage is a three-way split of shares between Radrizzani, the 49ers and QSI. I don’t see how that works.

Any change on just the 3/4 signings this window following Berra’s injury? Only one fit centre-half going into the Prem as of now. (Lewis W)

Apparently not. From what I hear, Bielsa only wants one centre-back (White, ideally) despite Berardi’s injury. Berardi has had surgery on his ACL and will be out for six to nine months. Leeds are likely to hand him a contract anyway, which would be the decent thing to do, but there doesn’t seem to be a plan to sign cover from him specifically. This goes back to a point of conversation which crops up all the time. Bielsa likes a small squad.

Is MB planning a trip home to Argentina to see his family? Has he already gone? What are the travel restrictions there? (Richard N)

No, I don’t believe he has. And it’s a long time since his family were last able to travel and see him. Argentina is on a tight lockdown. If Bielsa flew back, he would have to quarantine for 14 days (according to the latest advice).

Who is in charge of bringing in the academy signings ? Does Bielsa get a say on them? (Matt B)

The person driving that area of recruitment is Craig Dean, their head of emerging talent. Bielsa will be consulted, absolutely, but most of the scouting at that level is driven by Dean. It’s him who has been looking at the likes of Allen and Joe Gelhardt.

Gelhardt, any news? Would love a few more good talents in the squad. (Kim L)

This transfer is a long way down the line. There are no issues with his medical or personal terms and Leeds are happy to meet the price set by Wigan’s administrators. It comes down to whether Gelhardt wants to join and sources close to him have told The Athletic that the move should go through on Monday. A box ticked, just about.

Do you think that the Premier League and football, in general, are considering seriously the impact of another lockdown? The league is starting late and has to be completed before the Euros so there’s not much wriggle room. (Kevin W)

The impact would be financial more than anything. The Premier League and the Championship have already shown that they can operate in the midst of COVID, with testing and other measures. What another lockdown would do is delay the return of crowds and paying fans — a can which clubs do not want to kick down the road, for obvious reasons.

Any news on a replacement for Corberan? (Jack D)

You’ll all have seen the news about Carlos Corberan leaving to become Huddersfield’s manager. He had a dual role at Leeds, covering the first team and the Under-23s. One option for Bielsa is to give Diego Flores, his analyst, that role. It’s a possibility. But someone will have to take it on. Bielsa wants the position to be filled.

Can you see any players leaving the club — such as the under-23s on loan similar to Ryan Edmondson? Or do you anticipate more to be promoted? (Kamran G)

Yes, it’s likely that other under-23s will go on loan. Bielsa, in his first two years, was resistant to loans because he thought the youngsters were better off staying and training with him, regardless of whether they were playing. But there’s been a shift in attitude there and players like Robbie Gotts, Alfie McCalmont, Jordan Stevens, Leif Davis — I can see some of them signing new deals and then heading out.

Any update on the payment dispute with RB Leipzig for big Kev? (Callum S)

That’s at a standstill. For what it’s worth, Leeds insist the dispute over Augustin won’t affect their budget or their transfer plans in this window but it’s a bit of a tangle to say the least. Sources at Leipzig tell us that Leeds are trying to avoid paying on the basis that the contract stated Augustin should be signed if Leeds were promoted before the start of June. Leipzig argue that, in good faith, that should be taken to mean the end of the season (which was obviously delayed by COVID). But Leeds and Bielsa do not want to take Augustin. This could well end up with FIFA or in an arbitration process.

Aside from the Amazon documentary are they doing an end of season review? If so, when will it be released? (Emile M)

I don’t know about an end-of-season review but the next Amazon series is on the horizon. Two extended episodes, I believe. The cameras were very prominent during the run-in.

Did Leeds vote for or against five subs next season in the Premier League? I would have assumed against as we have a small squad and it favours the big teams. However, Bielsa seemed to use it to his advantage in the last nine games, making more subs at half-time and changing things up. (Richard B)

They voted against. Although seemingly they supported an extension of the rule allowing nine subs on the bench (which the Premier League voted down too).

Will there ever be a boy born who can swim faster than a shark? (Michael R)

Found the bit about Craig Dean really interesting, kids being identified by the head of emerging talent and his team and very little to do with Orta I would guess.

One would assume that he answers to Orta, and works just underneath him in the footballing pyramid at Leeds.

Orta answers to Radz but neither of them will have a day to day role/responsibility for identifying the U23 talent. Dean will have a degree of autonomy and I guess a budget.

Phil Hay is brilliant, Faith. His analysis and insight is unrivalled, his information is 100% reliable, and his podcasts are outstanding. I am sure the Athletic won't mind a little free advertising on this site, even if it means an article is poached from time to time.
