It seems as though Sancho is our primary target, which implies that the club shares the view that we need cover in forward positions. I reckon the loaning of Chong also indicates we're expecting to bolster our options.
We don't really have any outstanding talents in the youth setup ready to step up or provide cover either.
Ole knows more that any one else that we need one more who is going to be capable of being at first team level.
James will never be good enough sadly.

Seems a likeable lad with great enthusiasm for the club, but so 1 dimensional it hurts.
Given the greater quality of competition we're in next season we need to be able to rotate without a significant drop off in quality so we'll need at least one more attacker in.
We definitely need a forward. James is not good enough to be a United player and will never be.
Reason, why so definite, you may well be right. But the history of the club shows plenty of players that the fans wrote off.
The manager thought differently and they came good after a period of time.
We need a wide forward that can play both sides with Sancho being the obvious shout.
We have enough centre forward options at least until Ighalo goes.
Yes, but it doesn't look like we will get Sancho this season.
So we are two injuries away from a very weak forward line.

two? if we lost any of our 3 forwards we have no decent cover at all.
i don't get our transfer business sometimes, last summer we spent £150m, but went into the season with no decent number 10 (for a formation OGS seems determined to play) and no decent right winger.
fast forward a season, and we've brought in bruno, seen greenwood bulk up and improve, but established that mata and lingard are no longer good enough, and that pereira probably never will be. we've also lost gomes and chong.
so if our VDB is our first of many signings, all for the good; if he is a midfield signing at the expense of a forward player, i'd be concerned.

You're right. But I don't see that happening with James, quite honestly. I don't think he has the potential to be a United player.

Still think VDB is going to be the new backup for Bruno if he comes in.
I'm pretty convinced that we'll buy (at least) another forward, whether it be Sancho, Grealish, Brooks or someone else.
I expect we'll end up with:
Martial
Ighalo
Rashford
James
Greenwood
New RW
Bruno
VDB
One of Lingard/Mata
We definitely need another RW who can walk into the starting XI as a bare minimum. Sancho would be ideal but there are obvious financial caveats to getting that done.
Ole needs to rotate a bit more, instead of having Martial, Rashford, Greenwood start every game, he needs to rest one and give the likes of Ighalo a game. That will be made easier with a proper RW.
Rashford has withdrawn from the england squad. Injured.
