We still need a few more players in and a lot more players out.

Cant believe the price!
———
Really? It’s the fourth most expensive transfer from the Dutch league, after Ziyech, De Jong and De Ligt.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Arguably third depending how you look at it, Ziyech was £33m at the time, VdB is £35m.
https://theguardian.com/football/2020/feb/13/ajax-announce-deal-to-sell-hakim-ziyech-to-chelsea-for-fee-rising-to-44m
----------------------------------------------------------------------
His point is that it’s cheap compared to home grown players with the same ability. Excellent signing.
But it’s weird to be surprised by the price of a player being bought from the Dutch league. Buying homegrown has nothing to do with it.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
I’d say the price is about right, homegrown only used as a reference point that I was guessing g he was coming from, ie chillwell at 50m. Arguably a much less talented player than vdb.
But it’s still expensive by Dutch league standards. And you were the only one that mentioned homegrown. It’s irrelevant here.

he's confused, saw a debate about the respective qualities and price of dutch vs homegrown and thought we were talking about weed.

And with all other factors relative like we are Manchester United, Ed and Judge it is cheap.

It is cheap by Ed standards and that is more relevant to United fans. No one else other then you gives a $hit if it is expensive by Dutch standards.
Decent price for a great player in his prime years.
The price I don't care for
He's got good CL experience, has scored against premier league teams and is young with lots of potential
Hopefully this means our midfield will be rotated more often and we don't run out of steam

I don’t know why people love to measure transfer fees against each other like they should represent an objective value against a player based on only their age and talent.
There are myriad factors which affect transfer fees to consider - I read a list of approaching 20 once - and the majority of them have absolutely nothing to do with any measure of the player’s ability.
Probably because the difference between spending £30 mil on Donny and £70m on Grealish is another player?

That doesn’t mean that £30M is a bargain price for VDB or that £70M would be expensive for Grealish..
I’m talking about people judging transfer fees based solely on very limited criteria.
Ah, okay.
Well in that case it is simply a matter of opinion. Of course transfer fees take into account a number of variables but I think it’s reasonable to compare those two potential transfers and be satisfied that this is the better deal, all things considered.

There’s actually a consultancy group - I forget the name - that has built an algorithm which predicts transfer fees based on these myriad factors and seems to get them right to an incredibly accurate degree, both on occasions on which fans are weeping in despair about being rinsed and shouting with joy about picking up a bargain alike.
I’ll try to remember its name and post a link.
That’s really interesting, please do!

It’s a consultancy called Football Observatory.
Their model uses 57 different criteria to predict transfer fees. There’s a very high level overview of it here:
https://football-observatory.com/IMG/pdf/note01en.pdf
If you search a bit, you’ll find data they’ve published on the accuracy of the results of the application of their model.
