Calling what out. I openly admit there are opinions I value more than others.

You can call that out as much as you like.

And those opinions are always the ones that agree with your own. Everyone else is wrong or unrealistic,

Face it, you're only ever looking for self confirmation, you therefore dismiss everyone else as not worthy.

Nope, there are plenty of opinions posted about team tactics that are all fair calls. I may not agree, but I can see the value.

Can’t agree with your views on Coady tam. I do agree that he wouldn’t fit in a team playing a back 4. But we aren’t sticking with three at the back out of loyalty to him. It’s because our defensive record since we returned to the top flight has been excellent, and Coady to me has been outstanding in that defence and fully deserving of his international recognition

See Spangles as an example Tam. a coherent post making good points. I have my own reservations about Coady going forward. But in the previous system he was key.

This more attacking style yesterday, would it not have something to do with trailing for most of the afternoon?

Pushing out defence forward which I barely noticed isn't going to add goals to our game. We still play with two midfielders that rarely join an attack. And as tam says, playing three at the back and relying on two wing backs is what will need to change if we want to progress.

I agree that Coady was deserving of international recognition. That defensive record is at the expense of overall play though. As a team we are never going to progress unless we begin to control games, I can not see us doing that with this current system.

Coady is our leader. He has been a key part of getting us to where we are and is the key to this system. Removing Coady is part of accepting this system isn't working though; which will feel like removing the heart of the team. However, unless he evolves how he plays that role; I can't see us every building on what we have already achieved.

Neves had 3 shots at goal yesterday (1 on target) Moutiniho had 2 (both off target) They have both obviously been told to get further forward and support attacks. As defensive midfielders this is a bit of an alien concept for them but as Nuno is unlikely to change his mind I suspect we will see more of the midfielders higher up the pitch in the future.

But I think that was as much to do with the scoreline than an obvious ploy gem. Neves generally gets a shot off every game and as we were trailing and they were defending we naturally worked the ball into the final third.

I imagine Neves has three shots every game. Most end up in the stands these days.

Part of the problem with them playing higher up field is the space left between them and the back three (particularly with Coady sitting 10 yards inside his own half). One way he could evolve his play is to step out in front of the other two centre backs to become like a pivot midfielder when in possession.

It would allow us play almost like a back four in possession and for him to drop in when we form our shape defensively.

posted on 28/9/20

I think our system is easy to defend against, the opposition know that the ball will be worked wide and a cross will come in, nothing will be worked through the middle for the most part.

Could Coady play in front of the defenders instead of behind perhaps?

posted on 28/9/20

I think that's where a lot of problems stem from to be honest. Coady sits really deep, meaning that if the midfielder play higher then there is a massive gap and they don't have the mobility to cover that ground.

Tam, Coady is far too slow for that.

You don't have to be quick to be an effective pivot midfielder. Sergio Busquets was the best in business and hardly the quickest. Carrick was effective too.

Not to mention Pirlo.

posted on 28/9/20

Well Tam time will tell on that one. My personal opinion is that Coady would struggle in any other system, than the one we have been playing.

If we persist with pushing our defence forward, I would suggest Coady's days are numbered, I would be happy to be proved wrong though.

posted on 28/9/20

If we were doing to play with a midfielder in front of a back four, Neves and Saiss would probably be the best two options.
