Spendiola isn`t dragged up the league by the officials like some of the other clubs, so has to spend big to try and overcome that handicap

Well this proves one thing and that's when you want to play extreme football you need some incredible allround defenders. Pep had 4 of the top 10 fullbacks of the decade at Barca/Bayern and struggles to get them at City, let alone the required CB's for the high line.
You are struggling to replace the quality of yours when you were playing free flowing football the first few seasons under Poch, same with Barca now. And Bayern were somewhat lucky with developing young talent like Davies and Kimmich into those roles, but even they are still looking for a new RB...

Defending in general, especially in the Prem, is at a pretty low ebb. Most teams cannot defend a corner properly to save their lives.

I don't think it matters how good your players are if you leave them 4 on 3 at the half way line repeatedly.
