Ole refuses to drop his darling Pogba too. Relationship between him and academy players too close.

This too. I'm a big fan of Pogba too. More than most but he should have been dropped these last couple of games.

Whoever's fault it was I still think, a year later, allowing Lukaku to leave as easily as United did was a mistake. Outside of Aguero & Kane was probably the most settled & accomplished, out & out PL striker their was at the time. Just my blind opinion but it came across as a statement sell/Ole putting his flag down, more than a carelessly considered footballing decision, which is very believable when talking about United right now lets be honest.

I've heard the defending arguments from United fans countless times, and they do make sense, but I had a feeling it was a mistake at the time & it's only strengthened with time (signing Ighalo, etc...).

The mistake wasn’t selling him, we got an excellent deal from Inter. The mistake was failing to sign an adequate striker for the squad.

He clearly wanted rid of Lukaku. As soon as he was out the door, Ole was talking about getting rid of negative influences

Ole also said we weren't interested in Bruno the moment the transfer window closed last summer despite months of speculation. Ole is a politician and will say whatever is expedient to save face at the time.

I think some of our fans have forgotten just how bad Lukaku was as a footballer in his last season with us.

And I am meant to be the senile one.

Ole is a great man manager. He has a sprinkle of Fergie about him. Lukaku was a poison to the club and, like a proper manager, Ole got rid

Can you provide a link of Ole saying that?

yeah, i don't remember that. i do remember the club apparently leaking to the press that our scouts weren't convinced because he gives the ball away too much, but we tend to leak something negative about every target we fail to get.

Difficult player to out & out replace though. I'm trying to imagine how I'd have felt about him at Chelsea, he's one of those awkward ones you would wanna replace eventually but because of the outstanding PL record at all levels of the league (lower, upper mid & top) you'd want his successor to be as nailed on a guarantee as possible to work out. I'd be wary of replacing him with Werner & he looks quality so far.

Indeed Don. OGS has been very reluctant to discuss transfers.

Where has this sudden infatuation with Lukaku come from, i've seen this take posted a few times today... Just another stick to beat Ole with or did he do something great this weekend?

Nah, Inter had a tricky game against a tough opponent. So he got a yellow card and didn't score or assist

He doesn't play Fred, but because he's useless

Take it from a Chelsea fan, any players form in Mourinho's car crash season should be taken with a pinch of salt.

Costa looked dreadful in 15/16, next season 20+ despite not wanting to be there. No reflection of his potential value in a post Mourinho reign.

We had the replacement in the squad. The issue was our failure to get Sancho last season, and not bringing any other striker into the squad until January - and that was bloody Ighalo. He didn’t want to stay either, as Conte is a manager he’s wanted to play for for a while. So selling him was the correct decision, he’d never proven to be the correct striker for United.

It didn’t improve under Ole though. You may not have noticed how overweight Lukaku actually was whether it was fat or bulked up muscle.

He is still the same. He still has the touch of an Elephant and loses possession to much.

But he will score goals. That was never a problem.

But none of the potential direct replacements - Martial, Rashford or Greenwood - were guarantees to work. Players can be talked around, it was the ease to which United seemed happy to discard him being linked with players like Dybala & Mandzukic that may have made the link up with Conte more appealing than it would've been otherwise.

Just feels like United could've done more to keep him. It left a clear hole in the squad which Ighalo (not good enough) just wasn't gunna fill. Cavani might.

Lukaku didn't want to play for United. The guy said so himself. What was the point in keeping him?

He's still looks out of shape

Think he's like Higuain, always looks a bit fatter than he is, I wouldn't read into it too much.

It is amazing our best 2 goalkeepers are reserve keepers. I think De Gea wage means OGS is forced to play him. Real Madrid got lucky in the end the fax machine broke as they went on to win CL they wouldn’t have if they had De Gea in goal. Now thinking of it Real Madrid offered more than De Gea was worth.
