Number 9

We have surely given Chris Martin enough chances. I like him as a player and as a character but it was time for him to go. Charlie Austin is past it and expensive. We need to fins a youngster, either from within or from a lower league, but our scouting team in not good enough.

So who we are going to get who is better than Chris Martin for the money we want to pay? If no one then surely we should have offered Martin a new contract.

Stephen Humphrys. No idea if he's any good but he is a No 9 and from Rochdale which will keep VC happy

If only there was a young, strong, fast striker in the Yakubu mould. With Polish guy, Lawrence and Ibe behind him!

Always regret not being able to sign him and Portsmouth profiting from it later on in the season.
( Recent DET telegraph reminding me of both the player and our failure to come back for him. )

Share your sentiments regards Austin. Need to be looking at a hungrier striker from the lower divisions
( when market reopens ) or a loan option with Villa's young striker mentioned. I did have a look at free agents at the start of the season and there were some interesting options available - now it'd be too late given it'll take weeks to get them match fit.

Wellbeck has been released at Watford and certain fans are creaming themselves at this prospect. With him previously on 100k per week this looks highly unlikely.

Who

Keinan Davis

Also we've got Marriott, Waghorn, Duncan, Jahmal Ingram Hector.

I think we're missing a trick not playing to Marriott's strengths as he can hurt teams, we just need to function to his strengths. With his contract running out, not getting the service that will help him thrive that's a £4 million + player leaving on a free. ( Seems to be the story of our Transfer purchases, pay premium price, release on a free)

You would think that really good managers could play more than one way and take a look at the players they have and then play a certain way them suits them rather than shoe horning players into a system they just cant play

Not a dig at Cocu but most managers

Make no bones about it this is a fluck up.

They were confident of getting someone in to replace Martin and some good business in the market this summer aside, was the key position everyone new that needed filling.

We still have til next week to find someone but it will not be from abroad.

This Dursan chap from Darmstadt is a bust because even if we did a deal for him in January he won't get a work permit because we will no longer be in the EU.

Exactly Bushwacker.

Seem to have had it time after time with Derby managers playing players out of position (Weimman and Vydra prime examples) playing Bryson and Hughes in central midfield in a 442 formation when Pearson was in charge, or not trying the right formation.

They just need to take the wisdom we partake on this forum and promotion would be an absolute breeze.

Unless he has a German passport given he's spent a few years playing in Germany.

I think he was born in Germany Spart. It doesn’t matter because once we leave the EU all players who arn’t playing here already will need a work permit.

He won’t qualify under those rules.

Sorry Heb not for me, he has played 30 games in 4 years and scored 4 goals. He has also had his face smashed in with cheekbone, eye socket and 15 other bones broken. But I hope I'm proved wrong because like Ramdini, I would rather get a young player from the lower leagues who might end up making us a profit.

There was a bloke from somewhere in the west country who moved near the Fuller's brewery and has now gone for big money to a team in Brum. Can't remember his name though. Scored a perfect hattrick apparently against a poor side from the Mersey area. He is the sort we want.

Why are people taking my name in vain? I haven't mentioned a thing about Dursan, in fact never heard of him until a couple of minutes ago.

Interesting article. When you think about it we dont seem to have had many "Good" number 9's over the years. CM of course comes to mind - and whilst he was with us and playing regularly teams sussed us out realising if you stopped him you stopped us playing in the final third. Others that spring to mind are John O'Hare and Paul Goddard. I'm sure there must be others but as I said they don't spring to mind.....

Was Dean Sturridge a No 9?

posted on 8/10/20

Steve Howard and Rob Hulse were traditional number nines. Howard in particular showed that you don’t necessarily need a huge amount of skill or pace to be effective in that position. Strength and ability to retain the ball have always tended to be underestimated qualities in a forward. In the Premiership you need some star quality but at Championship level an old-fashioned battering Ram can be pretty useful.

Glad someone else remembers Paul Goddard, terrific partnership with Dean Saunders.
Then there was Mick Harford, what a player.

Yeah Paul Goddard. Now he, like John O'Hare wasn't particularly big - so it just shows that you don't (necessarily) have to be a big 'Battering Ram' type of No. 9. Must admit I'd forgotten about Rob Hulse. Was sorry when he left. Also Mick Harford & Stevie Howard too. Good players....

The much under-rated Conor Sammon. He worked his butt off for the team and people who judged a number 9 by his goal output alone were quick to dismiss his positive contributions.
I'm not saying he was John O'Hare just a decent footballer at this level.
I've always liked a tryer and Conor was definitely that. If only he could find the net, he had everything else.

What about Jack Stamps. A real traditional battering Ram type of No 9.
