OP
Good article, but it it is going to be increasingly difficult to get fans back into grounds, when pubs, restaurants, etc are being shut down again. It would send out the complete opposite message, although with this Government, that would hardly be unusual.
I did read somewhere that indoors venues like the O2, and others were preparing to open their doors again shortly. So if that is the case, then the Government could hardly tell outdoor venues like football stadiums that they cannot open, albeit with a limited capacity.
People scream and shout a lot and collectively sing songs very loudly at football matches. The mask would come straight off and the amount of expelled vapour droplets trapped under the stand roofs would contain lethal doses of Covid 19, if infected, to all those sat around you. Even if distanced by 2 seats.

It should be open to local fans. Like DJ said, fans within a certain radius.
This would be especially be helpful for lower league teams, who are on the brink of survival and need local fans back, asap.

Old Trafford would be empty then if it was just local fans invited.

I would rather see a tv package that broadcasts live games and you can pay into watch your team.
Season ticket holders get all the games free as part of the game. Others can buy into a game.
It doesn't bring fans back to stadiums but with a zoom kind of technology maybe zoom fans onto screens
Sounds nuts the latter part but I think covid is serious enough to not bother with fans until we make some sense of it. Bottom line is idiots will be idiots and not worth the risk.
Only option with in stadia that I see would be screens around each fan so they can't even touch the ball and throw it back etc. Which would be costly to smaller clubs.
So may issues with allowing fans potentially that an alternative like the paid games would help clubs financially and get more people watching games as they are stuck at home
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Spot on! There needs to be a digital approach to this. It seems to me that the only real plan of action throughout this entire pandemic is this...
1. Enforced lockdown > numbers decrease
2. Lockdown lifted > numbers increase
3. Repeat
There's never really been a plan of action by innovative thinkers on how we can adapt to this going forward. It's just "don't go out", "go out" on loop. Where's the plan? My brother is a teacher at a secondary school and he's said that it's an absolute mess. There is no real system in place that works. Why haven't they mastered the idea of online learning? They've had since March!!! Until a proper, safe plan is established for education, sport and social activity, we're always going to see fluctuating numbers. I don't see why we should exacerbate that further by attending football grounds. This is entirely the fault of the government for dragging its heels. People like to throw stones at him a lot but Tony Blair would have had this sorted by now.

Iirc the method of teaching kids in the falklands was radio then IT based. So we do have blueprints when needs must. And needs must
I know some schools did implement a home teaching method. My nephews and nieces did this for 2 hours a day. But it's a private school. So once again it seems to be a monetary decision to keep fees rolling in.
The scary thing locally was how many schools opened but we're shut down few days later as cases were reported.
As someone mentioned the pubs seem to have had a 5% rate but schools seem to have had a lot but we insist on schools reopening.
I'm no IT whizz etc but with kids now on smart phones and computers in most houses I don't see why it's a big issue logging in and having classes taught online. If folk can teach english to kids in china from their living room or bedroom then how hard would it be for kids to log in at a certain time and teachers teach?
In fact I did home schooling for my kids for the first part of their lives. And all reports and advice was that a couple of hours a day was enough. My kids achievements academically would suggest it works as all have done absolutely brilliantly in terms of gcses and a levels etc
Can anyone honestly see football coming back this season other than via TV coverage?

I think the reservations about bringing back football crowds are woven into the fabric of perception that football fans have a history of not particularly abiding by rules. The class divide plays a huge role in just how well any rules can be implemented. A large portion of the attending crowd, when faced with the governmental demands of wearing masks, no singing, shouting, standing etc will likely rebel and ignore as part of a growing disrespect of authority. I can see why there are reservations. Law and order has always been fragile in football. I don't see why this will be any different.
I think really clubs, particularly those further down the pyramid should be looking at cleverer ways to raise income without needing fans in attendance, in the short term. Why not an online subscription services to view games not on Sky or BT?
I'm just not sure about bringing in measures to get fans to attend when we're on the cusp of another major wave of CV. It's just not sensible. You won't be able to attend any events soon, let alone football.

The only "problems" I can see is the "culture" element (of that's the right word
So a sort of kids at school all day means parents can go to work.
I worked in an office for most of my life and the truth is my work didn't need me in 9-5. I was more productive working from home. Sure the day to day banter of office wasn't there but some of the banter was there to kill time.

No not really. We not safely or responsibly anyway
Don't really know why most posters on here worry about there being no punters allowed in Stadiums. They don't attend matches when they can.
Football has become an actual TV programme and will be one for a long while.

I miss going to games as a regular attender, but I must admit I will be surprised if fans are allowed back this side of Xmas. Possibly in the New Year at the earliest, but then I said that at the beginning of the pandemic. I am happy that at least football is being played, even if it is only on TV, better than no football.
As usual though England is way behind the Germans, who seem to have Covid under a reasonable amount of control, and are allowing supporters back in with limited managers. And apparently after Brexit Britain is going to rule the world again.

Not sure it's actually something you can blame the government for when people belligerently refuse to follow the rules. Whilst I entirely disagree with the rules I do follow them.
So many people dont. Not knowing Germany well, I'd imagine there is more compliance there?
Good comment aside of that.

most people in the UK don't know that they aren't
I guess we're all looking at this from a Premier League perspective. If you consider the EFL (League's 1 and 2 in particular), there will be many clubs that will go out of business without the revenue generated by fans attending games.
So, do we just allow that to happen or do we find a way of adapting to life without a vaccine for CV and without clubs going to the wall?
Supporters will stop going games themselves if lots of people contract Covid whilst attending them, if/when allowed back in.

"Not sure it's actually something you can blame the government for when people belligerently refuse to follow the rules"
This almost sounds like a direct Matt Hancock quote. It's what they always wanted. Loose, confusing and contrary rules in place so that when the sheet hits the fan, it's us and not them to blame. They're not concerned with making things safer for us, just a lawful way of throwing an accusatory finger of blame in our direction.

I mean this is fair. The eat out to help out thing was a prime example. Persuade people to go to restaurants by splitting the bill then shouting at people for going out. Frankly, if they really want to stop this issue they need to stop households mixing.
Still attend pubs, restaurants etc but tables should be limited to households. No exceptions. Obviously you'd be mixing with staff but they'd be obliged the follow the rules of their employer.
Shut the offices down, shut the schools down and keep people isolated from eachother.
As long as you allow people to mix this will spread.
But would people actually follow the rules? People would just laugh them off as unenforceable.

Well, just some of those in society who either think that... it's just like getting the flu... or they are young/fit enough to shrug it off... or or that it is all a hoax... will. That is for sure.
Those who feel/are vulnerable and at risk to Covid will stick to the rules. (If they work them out in their area).
Toilet facilities in most Grounds are inadequate,Qeues form at various times during the match. Spaces are limited anyway. The two metre rule. Forget that. It is just a joke contemplating allowing fans back in no matter how limited. I cannot see a reasonable conclusion to this problem until a vaccine proves successful.

Our democratic freedoms are coming back to bite us on the ass a little bit. I called this months ago. We're not used to being told what to do so when dictatorial measures are put in place, we raise the placards and burning torches. It's a hugely positive as aspect of western civilisation but just doesn't align smoothly with a global pandemic where strictly enforced rules are the only way to win. The countries with the worst human rights records are the likeliest to deal with it successfully. That's a shuddering thought.

Spurs have about a thousand toilets, so with just 25 per cent capacity, and probably no bars open, should not be a problem.

Don't get the difficulty here, things like Zoom and Bluejeans are built for exactly this sort of problem.

Can anyone honestly see football coming back this season other than via TV coverage?
++
