Anyway my point is that I don’t think we will even come close to winning it but I hate the defeatist attitude that we are here to make up the numbers.
--------
Weren't you the one saying we should rest players for this game instead of going for it?

Anyway, to stand a chance of winning the CL you need to be strong defensively as well as clinical in front of goal. One thing that is in our favour is we have been good against the better teams though.

But that’s just semantics really. But by saying you don’t think we’ll come close you’re basically agreeing with this notion anyway, which is my point.

For what it’s worth, I don’t think we have much of an idea where most teams stand given the weird start to the season.

I think you're underestimating our weapon of choice, penalty. So far 1 game 1 pen.

Exactly and now we’ve added the after full time penalty to our arsenal as well as being allowed to retake when we miss there should be no stopping us.

Yes I said we could possibly rotate before Chelsea. I didn’t mean put out the reserves.

The lottery thing is a bit overstated imo, when was the last time a comparatively poor side won the CL? Chelsea in 2012? It can happen but most of the time you need to be a top side to navigate through so many tough fixtures

Even that Chelsea team had experience and big game match winners. This United team has no chance

Let me assure you that we have much more chance than Wolves, who incidentally have never won it.

It did, but it was still the flukiest thing you’ll ever see in football.

The problem is when you’re using that Chelsea team as a reference point for your chances, it shows how unlikely your chances are. Similar to when people cite Leicester in a discussion over their league title hopes.

What worse sides than us have won the CL? And that’s not even me being negative to Ole.

I'd never heard of him so I looked on YouTube
Hes better looking and richer thab me so quite pleased. One major difference is I've been married three times, to women that is. I don't think he has.

Can't tell unless you play them. PSG we're finalists last year. Yesterday morning nearly everyone in football would have them as better than us.

Tbf they were a shadow of the side that got to the final. Barely any of the defence and midfield were available. Of course, that luck could happen in a knockout round and you never know but a lot of ducks in a row need to line up before we will win the CL

You do have a chance as it's a knockout tournament.

If you actually pull it off though it would be up there alongside Greece04 on surprise levels. So in short highly unlikely.

There are so many variables this season. Others have mentioned the vulnerability of the usual suspects, and the freakish conditions of football under pandemic being a bit of a leveller. One other variable is that (though each of us has our preconceptions) none of us really knows how good our own team is going to be this season. Very few of us saw the second half of last season coming back in January. Some assume we'll regress, and perhaps we will. But if we are lucky with injuries, if the younger players continue to improve, if some of the new recruits make an impact, and if cohesion and confidence grow, these incremental improvements could add up to us being a half decent team. I think it's natural for us to apply recent memory to our footballing expectations. In truth, most seasons don't turn out particularly as we suspect.

I intend to hope for the barely possible and enjoy the ride. If you start out without any kind of anticipation, what's the point?

I don't expect us to win the CL but I don't think it would be a massive, massive surprise either. Sometimes things fall for you and the fancied teams knock each other out etc. Like I said earlier we have a punchers chance IMO.

It’s early days, and things don’t usually pan out that way, but I cannot think of the last time where you’d be looking at the teams in the CL at this point and only being reasonably confident that one team will win it.

Liverpool in 05 and Chelsea 2012 were far worse than our current side.

😹 how can you quantify that statement though? Chelsea had Lampard, Terry, Drogba, Ballack, Mata, Cech, Cole etc. Just because the way they won the CL in such a crazy way doesn’t mean they were worse than us.

posted on 21/10/20

And ‘far’ worse 😂

What has this current United side done to warrant that faith?

posted on 21/10/20

That Chelsea team was pretty shiiiiiit, to be fair. They had a lot of big names but their performances didn’t meet the standard they’d shown in their prime.

It’s like saying Moyes’ United were good because we had Evra, Vidic, Rio, Rooney, RVP and Carrick.
