Nacho playing the deeper role suits him and clearly Barnes liked running off him. Different to playing with Vardy.

Where did Maddison play?

I always feel like there's some sort of undertone we're not fully clued up on when Rodgers talks about Iheanacho. Granted he had a bit of a slow start, but after growing into the game he played really well with his link-up play, got into good positions in front of goal a lot but never quite got the final ball to him (although the assist that finally put him in was inch perfect) and just generally had a good game. Yet in the post-match press conference Rodgers was far more guarded and keen to point out the negatives that were happening up front. There could have been more movement, he said. He wasn't particularly happy. And he wasn't overly enthusiastic about Iheanacho even when given the direct opportunity to do so. Although he did drop something of a hint that Vardy won't start against Arsenal at the weekend, so Iheanacho could well get another 60 minutes or so to show what he's made of.

Ultimately, it was job done tonight. They gave us a decent battle up to the first goal, then they never really looked in it. They were sometimes threatening, mostly dogged and occasionally diabolical. Next week away at AEK Athens is a big match for us, and I expect Rodgers will want to treat it that way.

Incidentally - good advert for female officiating tonight. She had a great game.

Mersey - first half, Maddison was in the 10 role of a 4-2-3-1. He looked a bit rusty. Second half, we changed to a diamond with Barnes up top with Iheanacho and he played at the tip.

He got better as the match went on. The 60 minutes today should help him with his sharpness.

To be fair, I think Rodgers did his homework on them. Zorya played a diamond themselves in the game, so Rodgers played a different formation to them in the first half to try to open the game up. After being 2-0 up at half time, he matched up the formations and effectively killed the game. They did nothing in the second half except for providing an inch-perfect assist for Iheanacho.
