How much would we have got for Leno do you think?

Gianluigi "Gigio" Donnarumma

Promise him anything and make sure Milan sell him to us in Jan. Come on Gazidis make up for Ozil.

Nothing. There was no market for Leno. His wages plus the fee meant he couldn't be sold.

Emi, along with AMN, were the only players with any value this summer.

Who said we should sell Leno?

£30 to £40m would have been good business for Martinez, £20m doesn't feel like much of a consolation for losing him and the confidence he was bringing to the defence. With him for the first time in a while playing out from the back never felt worrying.

Leno is obviously carrying a bit of added pressure on his shouders which is probably affecting his performance. But it certainly does feel like we are missing something at the back without Martinez.

I'd rather have kept Emi too, but we can't have two number ones, and who would we have sold Leno to?

AC Milan goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma has made more errors directly leading to goals than any other player in Serie A this season, according to WhoScored.

The highly-rated 18-year-old has committed three mistakes which have resulted in a goal since the beginning of the campaign.

It suggests that the teenager, who has started all 21 of his side's league games, still has room to develop despite his apparent precociousness.

Selling Emi was a mistake that Arteta should be forgiven for. However the real test of his management is if he is going to admit it and buy a new goalkeeper.

His contract is up in the air so I think its wiser to take his whole body work into account and he is regarded as one of the best Goalkeeping prospects in Europe.

Isn't really what I said and my point stands. Why post what he did at 18?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I’m guessing he didn’t realise the article was 3 years old

Anyway not convinced that guy is what we need. Also don’t necessarily want Leno replacer. He’s still a good keeper. But now he has 0 competition and knows no matter how badly he plays he’ll still start the next game.

Terrible decision by the club to sell Martinez.

posted on 22/10/20

Because why would you promise anything for an error prone 'keeper?

posted on 22/10/20

We’ll see how it pans out over the season. But I wonder if this whole debate of if we should have sold Martinez or Leno might be playing on Lenos mind too much and he feels under pressure to prove he’s better. He had his draw backs before, but he didn’t seem nearly as calamitous as he has since he’s returned, he can play much better than he is at the moment

It's too short sighted to say 'sHoUlD hAvE kEpT eMi'

The real question should be who do you think will gain us more points and change the dynamic of our team...Partey or Emi?

As much as we all loved Emi, the answer is more than likely Partey.

posted on 22/10/20

Yeah, have to agree with BW.

Selling Emi was... business.

Nothing more, or less than that.

posted on 22/10/20

It is questionable that the Emi money was for Partey. But we definitely needed about £20m there and then. We were very close to selling AMN until the firm interest in Emi came in. It was decided that Emi was the one to cash in on - largely due to Arteta not wanting a "league keeper" and a "cup keeper".

Let's see at the end of the season but it doesn't look great so far. If the Martinez money was for Partey then fair enough. It's a real shame we couldn't raise that money from all the other players we wanted to get rid off, would have been special to have Emi as our no.1.

There are a few "what if"s that need to be considered.

What if we had kept Emi and...
...sold Leno instead
...not sold anyone
...been able to sell someone else instead, maybe Laca.

Then you need to consider what price we would have got for them, if we were able to sell them and the impact on the wage bill.

For arguments sake, lets say VIlla asked about Emi and we said no but we'll sell you Leno instead and they said ok. we lose Leno and maybe £50-70k off the wage bill after giving Emi a pay rise.
