Assessment of First Part of the Season

No Spurs fan can moan chronic. If you ask me, Jose is doing a bloody excellent job. I’m afraid certain supporters will never warm to him
and it’s a shame. Blinded by their dislike, so can’t praise him when we are going in the right direction. Is it scintillating football every game ? Certainly not. But he’s developing a strong core and mentality very slowly. You can see it take shape. Let’s hope Jose can finally land some trophies here, as it’s been ridiculous the amount of years we have gone without winning a dime

By Christmas if we’re:

- in the top four
- within 5 points of top
- Semi final of the league cup
- Qualified for the knock outs of the EL

I’ll be very satisfied with how the season is going.

The cherry on the cake would be a slightly more attractive brand of football.

That 4 dropped points hurts me

Very happy we're in second place and I've got a good feeling about the City game. They will leave us a lot of space to attack, we just need to defend well and concentrate for ninety minutes.

Jose's experience will be important with these fixtures coming up, he deserves a lot of credit if we come out of the next 7 in the top 4 still.

As much as i go on about Sissoko in these games coming up is exactly where he does a good job and is important to the team for his off the ball stuff. The last 3 games though he really isnt needed and holds us back.

Hopefully we can go injury free too if the squad is used well and we rest players in the EL games in between.

Great article and summary.
I would add Doherty has been unfairly singled out at times, he isnt quick or dynamic but think other than the odd dodgy moment he has been good defensively and clearly has a lot to offer going forward.

Points wise we are where we should be after let’s be honest a pretty easy fixture list.

The real season starts now with the teams we are about to face. If we do well up until Boxing Day then we will have a real good chance at the title imo

Overall we’ve played some good football and some shiet football.

I agree with everything apart from the "undeserved wins" comment. We have deserved our wins. You don't not deserve them just because they are poor performances. Sorry, I know what you mean but it's just a pet hate of mine.

The ambitions at the start would have been top 4 and any trophy, but ambitions can change depending on the way the season goes. We could end up in a position to say that top 4 and a League Cup trophy would be a disappointing outcome.

The defence is looking fairly solid now. For all the aerial bombardment of both Burnley and WBA, I think they coped really well. I am not overly impressed with Doherty, but he did put in a peach of a cross for the winner yesterday, so would just leave it as it is. Toby and Dier look pretty solid. If only the midfield could stop the defence coming under so much pressure, that would be job sorted. At the moment it is far to easy to walk straight through the Spurs midfield, and get at the back four.

I agree, even though Spurs were not at their best yesterday, they had more shots both on and off target than West Brom, so fully deserved the three points. Both Son and Lo Celso missed sitters as well.

Good summary and I think 8/10 is about right.

If we we're going to mention winning games that we didn't "deserve" then we have to remember the points that we dropped which were equally not "deserved" to be dropped. It's swings and roundabouts.

I do feel that the team is taking shape nicely and let's hope that Jose settles on yesterday's back four going forward in the PL now. Although I share your concern about them dealing with pace and movement.

Dier and Toby A are suited to that kind of aieriel bombardment... which is why I am concerned about the clever movement and pace in the attacks we will face over the next portion of the season.

The fullbacks will provide the pace, in Sanchez presumed continued absence.

I wonder how far away Tanganga is from playing some football...

Excellent summary.

The Saints, United and West Ham games show we're capable of playing excellent football. The last three wins have been great, but the performances have been a concern. I think we'll have to up things after the break.

We'll have a good indication of how things are going after those fixtures. Anything in double figures points wise from them should have us on track for top 4.

Agreed. Like assessing the last 3 prem games we just nicked we had the majority of the chances at least vs Brighton and West brom despite them seemingly having a lot of the 'play'. Burnley there were barely any opportunities for either team.
Lot being made about the opposition in these games deserving more mainly because of how desperate all 3 teams are for points and how these were respectively their better performances of the season so far.

You still have to earn wins by putting the ball in the back of the net and stopping the opponents scoring, (not that West Brom had many great chances anyway) which we did so we definitely deserved the win yesterday.

Only if a ref gives a team a gift when they haven't played well is when I'd say it's undeserved, so pretty much exactly what happened with Newcastle.

A generous 7/10 from me. I’d say a vast improvement Is needed to get a sniff of top 4 or a trophy.

And the football I’m afraid remains pretty f*cking dire at times.

I think you also have to factor in that Spurs have already had four away trips around Europe this season, two to Bulgaria, plus a tricky Carabou Cup tie against Chelsea, so they really are doing exceptionally well.

Playing Thursdays in Bulgaria, then 12 noon on Sunday in West Bromwich is hardly ideal to getting free flowing footie. Once the group stages of the Europa are out of the way, I expect performances to also go up a lot.
