I already live in the best city in the world. But if visas weren’t an issue and neither was money and I was banned from Sydney for my numerous crimes I’d probably choose to live in Italy near Lake Garda

No, but my city has everything you could ever want and pretty much every foreigner I speak to is in awe of it and these are people who’ve been all over the world .

It’s all subjective of course but I’m sure most people who’ve been to Sydney would put it right up there with others

Fack Australia. I'd go New Zealand. Assuming I could get decent work it'd be perfect. Chilled people, beautiful scenery, far enough from everything to be safe in global disaster.. plus they like rugby. So yeah.

Probably a rural part of England with an old average age, where people still know how to have respect for their community.

(That makes me sound old)

South Africa in parts is also a strong contender.

Haven’t been to New Zealand but that might be a goer.

The New Forest, maybe near Lymington. A gorgeous area and by the coast

I used to live in Lyndhurst - really nice part of the world. But the people there are backwards AF.

It’s a way off yet, and I imagine it won’t exist as we know it now, but I’d very happily retire in the Pantanal. It’s a magical place.

Would love to one day visit São Tomé or Zanzibar. I’ve heard magnificent things about those places too, particularly the first.

For sure, if I’m lucky enough to choose, it’ll be somewhere *far* from the nearest city, with honest people and abundant fresh produce.

It is nice, and the ponies are a plus, so long as they are not in your garden.

Lived in Sydney for four months or so, and as cities go it has a lot going for it.

Can’t say Australian culture or the lifestyle really did it for me, though. Bit Americanised for my liking. Far more so than the UK. Which is, in itself, a bit Americanised for my liking

My other half did some legal work for a filthy rich bloke who had a very large, old, listed but completely refurbished house in Ballachulish. We stayed there for a night. I thought that this is what I wanted when I get round to retirement (maybe in 35 years). Drinking fine whisky in the evening and waking up to some stunning scenery in the morning.

New Zealand is also up there for me, south Island is like the Scottish Highlands on sterioids. Despite that I did get the sense of being cut off from the world.

Fun fact - Australia was always ‘British’ in its approach to all things culture until around World War 2 when we entered the war and found that the British had pretty much abandoned its protectionism of the country to look after its own interests closer to home.

Once the US entered the conflict and put troops in Australia to help with its defence that’s when the US culture started to seep in as the belief was that Britain had turned its back on Oz

Where in Sydney did you live? Glad you (kinda) liked it!

Sydney is great Robb. But I don't personally like living in cities. Plenty of other spots down that east coast I'd rather live.

It'd have to be one of the Thai islands or the Gili Islands for me.

Baseman’s Bay is great and a nice investment property area but I personally prefer big cities as love live music and sports and in Australia it’s really only Sydney or Melbourne where you get the best of those - Perth at a push. Small town Australia has much to offer but as far as culture goes it’s very limited.

Admin, why does every article I do have a spam filter on them once they get to a certain amount of words? Please can you fix it.

Also if I do a comment on an article and then press preview it does a spam filter thingy once I press send.

Do you hate my articles and comments that much? Does anyone else have this happen? 😣

In a two bedroom flat with seven or so other people and 1,000,000 or so cockroaches just off Hyde Park

Could actually see the Anzac Memorial from the door. Great location and a lot of fun.

Can understand why you like Sydney so much Robb, it has a lot going for it (albeit I’ve only done the tourist thing there).

Tbh I’ve only ever been to one place and thought, yeah - I could live here. And even then it wasn’t a specific location. The Mrs and I did a road trip around California for 3 wks and I genuinely liked it. Not fashionable to like America I know and not sure I’d want it now the country is so obviously politically divided.
