I'm pretty sure he was critiqued that year for not doing any defending edin, but agree with everything else, the way he picked the ball up like vieira and drove forward, with the end product of a lampard, was unreal. Joy to watch. That is up there for me as far as peak seasons go.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Put up some decent enough defensive numbers, albeit he was often slow to get back after driving the team forward so constantly and relentlessly. His tackles+interceptions was like 2.5 from game from memory which is decent enough. On top of that he was a real asset on defensive set pieces.

I think the best way of comparing them is who was best at what they did. Don't think it is fair to compare them on who was the best all rounder, because players like Kante and Makelele were/are not all rounders, but could be viewed as better DM/ball winners than what the likes of Roy Keane were.

I personally think Keane is better than both at what he did, but that's just a theory.

Michael Cox had this to say about scholes

"Scholes' peak was in 2010, his excellent form then tricked people into thinking he was that good his whole career

IMO he was far better in the deep role but only played it for about 15% of his career, he was a better deep midfielder at 36ish than he was an attacking midfielder at 24ish"
----------------------------------------------------------------------
His peak was most certainly not in 2010 ffs

I am also actually the minority of people who think his best football was as a deeper lying midfielder (probably talking around 2006-2008). That's not to say he was some average player before that though.

Yeah most of the opponents who praised him were doing so in reference to well before 2010 and maybe a little earlier than 2006. Henry & Vieira for example both said that to stop United you had to stop Scholes.

I don’t even want to do a list tbh because there are too many top players in there but the top 3 for me would be (not necessarily in order)
Scholes, Gerrard & De Bruyne

Lampard’a numbers are ridiculous but he played his whole career as a CAM/SS and he was incredibly good at it too.

Keane for me over scholes every day of the week.

scholes was a more gifted player, but Keane brought far more to the team.... says a lot when you can say the guy left the club 15 years ago and has never really been replaced
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I wouldn’t put them in the same class of player.

Scholes was a better dribbler, a better passer over every distance, had a better footballing brain, better vision, better tactical awareness, better positioning, made better runs, had a better strike...

Keane, like Gerrard, was a phenomenal captain. But he wasn’t the same class of footballer as Scholes, IMHO.

Scholes of 95-2003 time was favourite period. Seemed to play with more freedom, though that may be my memory playing tricks.
Didn't he miss most of a season with a serious eye problem?

Think the eye problem was late 2005 and saw him miss the rest of the 2005-06 season. He was actually brilliant in the season when he came back. I seem to remember both him and Giggs having what we thought were "Indian summers" in 2006-07 but it turned out they had a few more good years in them.

Gerrard, Lampard and Scholes in the same discussion.

I wonder which way this thread will go.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Wouldn't it have been great to see these three in the same England team...we'd have won the wor......
----------------------------------------------------------------------
SCHOLES PLAYED ON THE LEFT!!!!!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
yeah that's why we never won the world cup then...
----------------------------------------------------------------------

As it happens, all three were never at a World Cup together, only Euro 2004.

Lampard played CM in a 4-3-3 (or a 4-4-2). He just scored goals from that position. If he's anything he's the most unique player in the list because no other player in the list (and in PL history) did what he did.

Yes he had a few good seasons after his eye issue, just loved his style of play when first came along.

Boring though innit. Proper percentages football, coached to the nth degree.

I agree this is when Scholes was at his best. There seems to be a rewriting of history in regards to Scholes as he's seen as this Pirlo type player when in reality he only moved back there when his legs had gone and he was used to keep possession and keep the ball moving, similar to what Gerrard did for Rodgers in his final year, when he got into team of the year and nominated for player of the year. In reality Scholes was best behind the striker as he had great ability to arrive into the box and score goals. He was also excellent next to Keane, despite Keane being the better player as they were able to work tactically together, with Keane covering every blade of grass, one minute being in the opposition box having burst forward and the next defending in his own box. Scholes complimented him well by sitting when Keane went forward but also with his long range shooting. Having started out at United up front, this was naturally one of the best parts of him game but got some reason people see him as a Pirlo type player, despite him playing most of his career in more advanced roles.

it is funny - and a bit odd - how these memes spring up and then persist, lampard is the 5th highest scorer in PL history, has c. 50% more goals than any other midfielder, yet some people will have it that he only ever scored via deflections.

in terms of falls from grace, it's up there with R9 now being known as "fat ronaldo".

Yeah I'm talking early 20s, when he doing well at West Ham. Don't remember him much before that. Although the press conference when he's sat with Harry Redknapp was outstanding. The press were basically laughing at Redknapp's suggestion that he will go to the very top.

Gerrard shouldn’t be on the list anyway - basically had to play him upfront or on the wing because he couldn’t be trusted in central midfield.
