Gerrard shouldn’t be on the list anyway - basically had to play him upfront or on the wing because he couldn’t be trusted in central midfield.

WUMston is BACK!

I’ve missed this version of you, Winston.

The thread seemed to be dying out...

In truth, it was a joke.

Though there’s absolutely something in the discussion that Gerrard wasn’t suited to a two man central midfield and what that means about him as a player...

... but we won’t get into that now. Again.

He was excellent in a two man midfield, unfortunately the system wasn't sustainable due to teams changing to three men midfield and over running the midfield. That was my favourite Gerrard, when he was doing the Keane role, all over the pitch.

Okey dokey TOOR, thanks for clearing that up.

No problem. If that isn't enough he got voted CL player of the season in 2005 as well as PL player of the year and four team of the years, in the years before that, as well as third in Balon D'or, all playing central midfield. I do love a good Ja606 myth however, especially when it completely rewrites history. Crazy for somebody not suited to the position.

Not entirely, maybe a little bit, but I do love your passion for the subject and I like the way you bend criteria to suit your point.

Certainly not debating Gerrard with someone who thinks he’s the 3rd best player this century though.

No offence mate. Enjoy your evening.

Bend criteria? Where have I done that? I simply replied to the suggestion that Gerrard wasn't suited to a two man midfield with facts showing that the be incorrect. He was recognised by his peers as being one of the best when playing in a two man midfield.

This all comes from 2006 when we were struggling for goals and Benitez moved him to the right, where he had his best goalscoring season and laid on a load of assists with his crossing ability. Around this time the best teams began switching to three in the middle, which was Benitez' preferred system at Valencia, a 4-2-3-1, so he employed Gerrard in the middle of the three attackers behind the striker, in the Aimar role, which of course he also excelled at. Every position he played he was excellent. Rodgers moved him back to be the deepest midfielder when his legs had gone, the same thing which happened with Scholes and he was also excellent there, even at 34 and again got voted into team of the season and nominated for player of the season. He could play anywhere, a complete player.

But as I said, my favourite Gerrard was when he was in a two man midfield and could show how complete he was, rather than being used for goals and assists, closer to the forward. He'd have made a top right back also, I'm sure.

Nobody is going to have success rewriting his history when it's written.

Lol this is brilliant, thank you.

606 has spoken. Fabregas not rated too highly, think I had him too low myself.

Without doubt, it's happening. I just need to wait for the next Gerrard debate and then I'm wheeling it out.

Funny how Wahl has to bring up such a list but I was arguing with colleagues the other day that as a creative force, Cesc, Silva and even Ozil blow De Bruyne out of the water.

Obviously KDB has other qualities but even his goal scoring has dropped. He is 29 now but I guess he still has the opportunity to surpass the other players.

Surprised Fernandinho is not in this list.

In order of how good they were (at their best):

Patrick Viera

Daylight

Steven Gerrard
Yaya Toure
David Silva
Cesc Fabregas
Kevin De Bruyne
Roy Keane
Frank Lampard
Paul Scholes

Michael Essien
Paul Pogba
Claude Makelele

Juan Mata
