I remember the world cup "hand of God Goal" like it was yesterday. It was 34 years ago! Life passes quickly.

Looks like the cocaine and alcohol put him in an early grave.

Unbelievably has Madonna trending on twitter as Americans struggling to read and thinking its her who has died.

Football genius, not sure we’ll e we see someone that gifted again.

RIP maradona.

Can't decide who was the best footballer of all time,
Maradona or Messi?

They both made football into an art form...

RIP Diego

Messi is a fantastic footballer, and maybe it's just my own age, but I've never enjoyed watching him as much as I did Maradona.

Saw that and just been messaging my best friend about him.
In England the view of him perhaps understandably will tend to be tainted after 'the 86 hand of god' incident and a few other things. However if you take a step back and look at the old footage of him, his raw footballing ability was incredible and he was doing skills, free kicks and all sorts of moves almost 20 years before their time.

I guess like him or not he will be remembered and always talked about.

Despite that hand of God goal I liked him, wonderful exciting skillful player. Better than Messi in my opinion. Sad day. RIP Diego.

Absolute genius player.

Him and Pele for me as the two greatest to ever play.

I was angry as hell at him for the hand goal. But even then his build up play to get into position to score was
incredible. The second goal dropped mine and every
other jaw on the planet. Even those England players.

He gave everything on the pitch. An amazing legacy.

RIP

It will be interesting to see any comments from Bielsa about him if asked in the next pre-game conference

People will argue the goat thing and reality is there are too many variables to answer that definitively - but the standout thing for Maradona was his ability to lift an average team. What he did for Argentina and Napoli was remarkable. Obviously the hand of god will always rankle to those of us of a certain generation, but he was one hell of a footballer. RIP.

RIP Diago

NJS.. has this debate many times with my pals... messi vs diago..

I’m with milky, too many factors and debatable points to call a winner either way for me

Milkyboy as usual makes very good points....

Different times, players weren't protected as they are now, players like Maradona, Pele and Eusebio were fouled and abused in competitions like the World Cup.
One of my disappointments watching the '66 WC was watching Eusebio being kicked out of contention by opposing defenders, spoiled the competition for me, he was my favourite player on the International scene.

The pitches in those days were mud heaps in winter and bone hard often in spring/summer, not the pristine lawns they play on now!

On the skill sets of Maradona and Messi as Milkyboy states it's hard to compare, personally my vote would just be Messi....but what Maradona did for Argentina and Napoli was remarkable.

Always remember Platini's comment when someone tried to compare Zidane with Maradona not many years after the 98 World Cup.

"What Zidane could do with a football Maradona could do with an Orange".

For me he was only eclipsed by Pele due to Pele's all round game, longevity and World Cups.

Technically Maradona is the most gifted Footballer in history.

He got my back up against England in 86 but in all fairness he dragged Argentina to that World Cup- his pass to Burrachaga for the 3rd and winning goal in the final was something else.

Truly blessed with unique God given talent.

Yeah, flawed genius and all that...he may have been a great footballer but he will, in my head, always be a cheat. Great players, great men and women who do anything, they don't need to cheat.

One word .........Cheat

Genius footballer ..... flawed genius (don't all people we class as a genius have flaws?).

No more a cheat than players feigning injury in the modern game.

Messi or Maradona .... who cares - both remarkable.

One word .........Cheat

------------------

I wasn't going to rise to this, but as usual Lowfeilds manages to get my nerves !!

apart from being very disrespectful towards a brilliant player who has passed away, or indeed disrespectful to another human being who lost his life.

I just hope lowfeilds doen't comment when Henry dies, or when most footballers for that matter pass away, as some form or another, a dark art has been played to gain advantage in professional sport.

lowfeilds, you should be ashamed of yourself, lowlife, would be a more fitting name

posted on 26/11/20

That's what he was, not ashamed at all, just because he's died changes nothing.

I read somewhere that Maradona asked Bielsa to go to Boca to coach them but Bielsa hated the owner and siad he wouldn't even meet him for a coffee but said he would walk the earth for Maradona. Something along those lines.

There's a good article on Maradona here:

https://www.theguardian.com/football/2020/nov/27/brave-intelligent-diego-maradona-was-a-man-who-moved-through-different-air

Reading it hasn't diminished my loathing of cheating and cheats, however.

It's one thing to say, okay, Diego Maradona was a great player but not a great human being, but its quite another to say he was such a great player that the giant flaw in his integrity as a human being doesn't therefore matter so much. My point is, surely being a great human being is a prerequisite to being a great footballer. A football player who is not a great human being - who has no integrity - can't possibly be called a "great player."

I wonder what Bielsa, who is possibly one of the greatest ever coaches, thinks about this.

I also wonder why some of you have targeted Lowfields without also targeting me. Lowfields was only agreeing with my earlier comment. Why him and not me?
