Can anyone see any signs of grass on that photograph?

Certain it was Gemmill in 1975, Peter Daniel was player of the year that year. Daniel was a regular under Tim Ward even though he was teenager, as was the other full back John Richardson who everybody thought was the better player. In the mid 60s we were a side made up mainly of home grown players until Brian Clough arrived and kicked out that policy. Few survived his cull. Only really Webster with Boulton and Daniel in the reserves. History repeating itself? Will we find another Brian Clough.

Who was captain when we won the league in 1975?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Archie Gemmill till the last 4 games when it was Roy McFarland. Peter Daniel was immense that season deputising for Roy and won player of the year, while Colin Todd won the national award.

Happy Days.......

When I first started going regularly, Richardson was right back and Daniel was a weedy left back, he was poor in those days. When he did so well as centre half later, we were all thrilled for him, he was like a Bucko.

Neither those players were homegrown. Keven Hector from Bradford PA, was at Leeds as an apprentice. Durban was signed from Cardiff.

In the 60s we had Saxton, Webster, Richardson and Daniel in defence. All came up through our reserves and all very young. Saxton was captain. We also had two Derbyshire opening batsmen playing at times in Hall and Buxton. Forward line in the old 2 3 5 formation of Hughes, Thomas, Buxton, Durban and Hodgson struck fear in to no defences at all. Signing of Hector was the first light in a very long dark tunnel.

OK Spart, but just to be pedantic...Boulton came from Cheltenham.

I remember that forward line well and Hector made it ten times as good when he replaced Buxton, who I thought was rubbish, he was better at cricket. Ian Hall was a good straight man to Graham Richards but was rather miserable, I liked him, I wonder if he is still alive?

Ten times better, sounds better.

Yes you are quite right, us oldies have seen plenty of decent players and know what we are talking about...unlike my pal Malcolm on RD.

We have seen it all before Desi and experience tells us that is unlikely that relying on our academy to bring though enough players of even Championship quality is not a policy likely to bear fruit.

Acquisition of good players from other clubs has always been the basis of our successful periods. Acquisition of poor quality players has always led to us relying on our youth teams to provide players but it has never done so in sufficient quantities. We are in that scenario at the moment.

A challenge if you like. You have the pick of every Derby player over the last 60 years. Try and make a decent team of 11 home grown players.

Tough as they'll all be in their 70's now.
