As a question, because I've researched this online and haven't found any comment on the matter, does anybody know for an actual fact that the bloke he was addressing is actually a black man?

I did find a link reporting that this user in particular (whose profile is private) is one of only 300-odd people who Cavani himself follows, so presumably they are acquainted to some extent.

As I've said elsewhere on the thread, I have close Latin American friends who address their own partners using the negro/a term without either of them actually being black people - it follows that when they use the term in this way, the word is stripped of any contextual reference to race. Would the term suddenly become racist if their partner did happen to be black? Could they then be accused of psychological abuse if they're in a long-term relationship and have been using the term ever since they met?

The etymology of the word in this case becomes irrelevant, just as it is irrelevant to us that the term barbaric stems from a Greek word that simply meant 'foreign'. Are we then going to ban anyone using that word on the grounds that its use is xenophobic? Should parents be jailed or reprimanded for naming their daughter Barbara?

The picture I saw was him with a white man, but I don't know if that's the person in question.

There are white people who use the n-word amongst white people as a term of endearment, so removing all emotion from it, should we deem that the n-word is fair game?

Words do evolve over time but as a black person I do not even like the use of the work in hiphop culture, so I cannot agree with the idea that because a small section of people have re-invented the word and use it more liberally, that it has a completely new meaning.

No mate, your are completely decontextualising the use of the word in a different language and mistakenly interpreting it as if it was the same in your own language, which it plainly is not, as has been explained ad nauseam.

When you have the time, I would entreat you to read the following link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Negro#Latin_America_(Portuguese_and_Spanish)

As you will see, we are not talking about an exceptional and derogatory usage, but a widespread usage that is shared by people of all ethnicities in the Spanish-speaking world.

Proof of your misunderstanding is that you insist on equating negro in Spanish with the n-word in English. The Spanish word 'negro' simply isn't semantically loaded in the way you seem to be convinced it must be. It is the absolutely standard word for black.

Ironically, despite its Latin roots, the word etymologically found its way into English through Portuguese and Spanish.

What basically happened is that English took a word that had a very broad meaning, and over time came to apply it restrictively in an extremely derogatory form.

Now, English-speakers like yourself are trying to tell Spanish speakers that its meaning is inextricably linked to the one that the English-speaking word has restrictively applied to it, and are demanding Spanish-speakers to stop using it in its standard form.

Ironically and unintentionally, you are exercising a form of cultural imperialism to try to impose what you deem are your superior views upon others.

Usage, of course, is not set in stone. Cultures always have and always will have an influence on each other, and it's entirely possible that owing to the current cultural ascendancy of the English-speaking world, the equivalent word for black in Spanish may come to be rejected as a form of endearment among Latin American communities of all ethnicities, but I honestly don't think it's for the rest of the world to decide. If Afro-Hispanic populations come to see the term as offensive, I am quite sure that it will eventually come to be seen as offensive by the entire Spanish-speaking community, but as of today it is not the case.

What I found most amusing about this thread was not Liverpool’s fans inability to use context, but that they have labelled Cavani as using the same word that Suarez was supposedly not racist for saying. Complete embarrassments

Must be horrible watching someone dole out racist abuse wearing your team's shirt though. Reflects badly on the whole club.

Anyway, I'm sure Edinson will be more careful on Instagram now he understand the social mores of the UK

I never saw anyone dole out racist abuse. Don't think anyone did apart from Evra and maybe Kuyt.
