Maybe everyone just looks worse to you this year because Villa have their first slightly above average side in decades?
I'd go with KDB as the best when he's fit, he's the player if i could pick any player to join United it'd be him. Even though we don't really need KDB, he would still be the player to go for

I’d chuck kante back in there based on this season, wasn’t at his best last year due to injuries but is back up and running at a very high level.

Also think vardy deserves a mention
For me it's KdB and probably has been for about 2/3 seasons now. Against excellent players he regularly looks a cut above imo.
However, Kane this year has been excellent. Not just the goals and assists but his influencing of games.

Because he signed a new contract and gave up.
Surely Sadio Mane should come on this list? I dare say I'd have him ahead of Salah although I believe he should be on the list ahead of Bruno imo.
From this list, I'd pick De Bryune. Nobody else has a big a influence on a game than him based on these players.

That said why no Kante in the list? Without him Leicester wouldnt have got near the title and as soon as he moved on to Chelsea, they then won the league.

That’s one thing they definitely would not do. United always had a bad game in them.
Probably KDB closely followed by Mane.
You could make an argument that Bruno Fernandes has been the best since he’s signed in January though.
