It goes to show that playing 4-2-3-1 or playing with two 'defensive midfielders' isn't an issue if the attitude is right and we actually set out to attack.

This.

They did make it easy for us though.

Sounds like McTominay was all over the pitch and that’s how he’s most effective. He and Fred are still the best base for a 4231 we’ve got.

Confidence is setting in. At least in midfield/attack.

Reading the comments across the first 5 or 6 pages of this thread is just hilarious. I hope someone has the tenacity to create a thread full of every single one of them.

I wasn’t happy with James starting at all, thought Greenwood had looked better recently and needs to get a bit of form and consistency, plus he’s played the least of our attackers and didn’t need rotating. Jakes is usually a waste of a shirt imo.

Could fully understand the McFred axis ahead of Matic or Pogba in a frantic game against Leeds.

Said hopefully Jakes proves me wrong, and he did well. Fair play. Used his pace well today which he needs to do more. Nice for him to nick a goal too.

McT was fckin incredible today though

I think James helped today. Just because I'd his pace and energy to get about the pitch

With Fred and mct doing the same we got numners forward

As much as I love martial and greenwood they don't offer that tracking back and getting around the pitch.

Made a difference

Somebody explain James starting...
it’s bad enough with McFred, looks like we going for our counter attack, and let Leeds have the ball.
But James? Over Donny, Pogba!
Jesus wept

We’re managed by a clown who doesn’t know what he’s doing.

Our mindset was different today I feel rosso.

Our previous mindset would maybe see us win but by 1 or 2 goals.

We simply haven't had players running forward in the number we did today. Usually it's rashford and bruno alone.

Their style does help us but we simply had a tactic that I haven't seen all season, in terms of players getting forward
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It wasn't the attacking mindset that made a difference. It was the press. We;ve not pressed like that since Ole's first 13 games in charge.

It was the "headless chickens" that helped/allowed this.

Fred Mct and James

They nah not be the footballers we expect in martial and greenwood and pogba but their energy to get about, track back etc allows pressing

Don't most goals come from mistakes or someone not marking / defending properly?

As I said on page 5, Greenwood doesn’t offer the natural defensive solidity and team shape that James does. Greenwood is a striker playing wide. It has some advantages but James plays the position in a way that helps the team. He’s not the most talented and I’m certainly not a fan but our best performances have tended to be pretty much exactly the team Ole played today.

Fergie often used a work-horse type player in a wider role to create some balance to a more attacking side (Park, Hargreaves, Welbeck).

Furthermore, how many times do people have to been proven wrong about a particular lineup before they just shut up and reserve comment until they’ve actually seen at least some of the game?

he kind of makes sense. we still can't break down more orgnaised teams. we don't have the high tempo passing and movement when in possession.

We've scored the second most goals in the league, with a game in hand

Lol man.
Our strikers miss the easiest of chances and we are the 2nd highest goal scorers of the league, with a game in hand.
I think Jimmy's chatting absolute hogwash.

If we were as deadly as Liverpool we'd be top scorers by far.

The distribution of our goals is a concern.

25 of our 28 games have come in 7 of our 13 games.

We’d be top if we had a better spread of goals across the 13 games.

But can’t complain too much. Liverpool are a better team than us.

It was always a commonly used term here and invented by us - not sure why people get so upset about it in recent years.
