I hope it is a loan as we spent a lot of money for player so young and there is obvious potential there.

But do not get attached to players, they come and go. Arsenal fans should know this more than others - especially concerning young players with potential.
There will always be the next future star... haven’t we just signed Omar Rekik? Case in point.

We paid Saliba 27 mil. Everyone expected he will go straight in XI and we will build team around him. He isn't some kid who should go through u21 or u23.

He is 19 years old and had one break out season in the French league (in which we signed him). I disagree everyone thought he would be an instant first team player, the noise from the club was not to put that much expectations on him. Then it turned out we wanted to go on loan which fell through and the rest is history; He wasn’t ready and circumstances hindered his development. Let’s hope he gets a loan or at least we recoup our investment.

We really don't know how good he is so lets not get too worked up abt it. Tbh would have liked to see him once at least to make fair judgement.

What this does show is that as a fanbase we don't trust Arteta.

Thing is he can't be so bad not to start even in carabao cup. Atleast try him, if he fails then it's okay to sell him.

Maybe they have seen enough in training?

Maybe he’s had issues adjusting to living in the U.K. and at 19 with the world situation as it is who can blame him?

Must be a player in there somewhere.

In part it what I said about circumstances being against him. We (Arteta) clearly wanted to ship players out last summer but who wanted them? Our CB options are papa, mustafi, chambers, Luiz, holding, Mari and Gabriel. A loan for saliva was clearly preferred as the others were on high wages and good performances would have meant we might be able to off load them.

Maybe Saliba’s attitude to the snub has not been as prof as Arteta would want, maybe this has affected his performances in training? Who knows.

I understand the temptation for people to lay the blame for this at Arteta’s door, however, what should be remembered here is a EL club spent over £100m in the same window on just TWO players, both from the same league, both still relatively unproven at that time, all in a bid to ‘outsmart the market’.

We know what we have with Pepe, so, despite what Arsenal U23s bloggers might think, is it so hard to imagine Saliba is also not all he was cracked up to be?

Especially given the guy responsible for both signings has since been dismissed from his position at the club.

It’s got nothing to do with adjusting to the UK. We tried to bin him in the Summer, too.

People saying he is a world class talent are just saying it to suit their narrative. The reality is we don’t know how good he is and I can guarantee 99% of Arsenal fans have never even seen him play before, at a senior level anyway.

The problem though is that he has not been given a chance when very poor players have been given much more than one chance. We’ll never know how good he could have been for us and it just seems to be down to dictarteta not personally liking him which is pathetic.

Starting Mustafi and Kolasinac in the League Cup ahead of him suggests there's something very wrong

And also saying he’s not ready and then playing Runar

Everyone knows I loved him as a player but I hate him as the manager. However, I'ma cut our little dictator a break on this one. Saliba had sh !t to do with him and he just got lumbered with an already standing debacle. Let's face it the whole thing was a mess from the buy now but loan til next year, clownschool transfer deal. Lil Pinocheta is just the poor mug who inherited it.

I won't forgive him for his dictating, favouritism and just general moronic decisions. But I can't well claim Wenger and Emery repeatedly got fecked over buy the dodgy dealing that owns the club. Then have a go about Arteta's conduct in the market. It's not him, same as it wasn't Emery or Wenger...

IT'S THE OWNERSHIP!

Pep was the final straw?

Ballard > Saliba...

Arteta has said some strange things about Saliba along the way. Something like he dives in too much (didn't commit a foul last season, the CBs he uses dive in a lot). Then he said he couldn't be used because he isn't in the squad (he is, as an u21 player. He is listed in the squad on the PL site).
There was a time when Arteta talked him up as getting to the level expected, yet even with 9 subs he isn't considered.

Seems very likely it is more than a talent issue, Arteta just doesn't want him.

I thought so at the time but man did ke prove me wrong

It has however reinforced my belief that Pep was offered this job and even asked to take it on by Wenger. But when Arsene levelled with him about ke's way of doing things, that was it, he never working here as long as ke owned the place.

Could just be that the nature of the deal from the start. First he waits for him to arrive so is stopped from buying anyone. Then he's late due to Covid, then he's homesick, then his mum dies. Meanwhile he barely speaks English (could be sucking in those lessons too) and after all that, turns out he looks a bit suspect once Arteta sees him play

I can definitely see how anyone might just be at a "Ya know what, I've have enough of this sh !t, he's been nothing but grief from day one. Just offload him we'll figure something else out, just get as much cash as you can," point. It's enough try the patience of the best of us.

If he's crap, then there is very good reason to get worked up about the fact we're squandered big money on yet more dross. It's amazing people blame Kroenke for not investing money in the team, but it really is astonishing how wasteful we've been over the last half-dozen seasons. I can't think of a team in the league who have spent so much on so much garbage.

Spend £28m on a player
Not play him once
Sell at a substantial loss 18-24 months later

Sounds like Arsenal

posted on 2/1/21

Obviously we haven't seen him play much so we can't be 100% sure how good he is but it's not like we were the only ones after him, he was seen as a genuine talent. Things may have gone against him but to not even give him a chance is a failure on Arteta and the other coaching staff. The treatment of him and Balogun is is another good reason to sack Arteta.

Peaking between the copious pop ups, I’ve just read the report on Football London and seen the tweet from L’Equipe.

Yeah, can see there being something to this tbh. The manager doesn’t think he’s ready, but the player doesn’t want to wait.

We didn’t let him play for St Étienne in the cup final at the end of last season, presumably because we wanted to get him assimilated into the squad, only to not play him.

He’s gone from playing first team football, being rated as one of the hottest young defensive properties in the business, to being sidelined, sent off playing for our U23s, having his quality questioned, all whilst dealing with one of the worst personal problems possible. At 19 years old.

I feel sorry for him, but I’m f/cking furious with the club over this too.

Maybe he's so crrrap the club believes they'll recoup more money if no one ever sees him play?

Shambles of a situation regardless

I reckon if you asked fans blind "Which PL club made that deal?" a good 70-80% at least are answering "Arsenal or Man Utd! City and Chelsea always get good money back so it's gotta be one o' them two"

Just imagining them all standing there with looks of shock and horror going "feeeeckin hell, how did we pay 27 mil for this? Oi listen, we gotta make sure noone ever sees him kick a ball"
