Liverpool would have potentially won the league with a more expansive system in that season, had some really good players in Mascherano, Gerrard, Alonso, Torres etc. You can't fault what Rafa did for the club though.

Don't disagree with this, but always felt United were just too good that year. We had a great first team but outside of that we didn't have too much.

That team with Gerrard, Alonso, Mascherano, Torres was still probably my favourite team as a Liverpool fan, Benitez was a brilliant manager for us. Can't forget Dirk Kuyt either, loved that man!

Torres also didn't score at Anfield until February against Chelsea. Can't remember exactly but he must have missed quite a lot of games for him to not score until after Christmas at home.

It was a great season, from what I can remember I never felt too worried about Liverpool even though they had some top players and we were also concentrating a lot on the CL.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Probably how they view is this season tbf, minus the cL part
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That's not unfair to say at present. They're still very capable on going on a mad run but they do have a tough month coming up.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Weird thing is I actually expect us to do better in the tough months than the easy ones. Our Achilles heel this year hasn't been the likes of United and Spurs. We've beaten Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs, Leicester, Wolves etc but failed to beat some utter crap sides.

I think we will put a proper performance in this weekend. You may be too good for our frail defence though that's my worry.

Should be a better game than the crap we've been served up in recent years.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Frail defence you say.In the 4 full premiership games you played with the best defender in the world you conceded 11 goals. In the 13 league games since you have conceded just 10.

Over the past few weeks it's up front where you have been looking out of sorts and not your defence.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
We haven't faced many attacks as good as United to be fair. If Matip is back meaning we can push both Hendo and Thiago forward a little I'll be far more confident.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The 4 games you played with the best defender in the World where against Chelsea,Arsenal,Leeds and Villa. You conceded 10 against Villa and Leeds alone.Your defence conceded on average 3.25 goals per game with VVD and are now conceding less that 0.8 per game without him.

As I said earlier it's further up the field where you are struggling and yet you have Salah,Mane and Firminho to chose from week in week out.

*that should be 2.75 goals per game not 3.25.

I would suggest that the Villa game is a statistical anomaly that skews your analysis and hasn't been accounted for.

My memory is hazy, but I think I recall a stat that Gerrard and Torres were only able to play together 14 times in the league that season (might have been start together) because of injuries.

Alonso and Mascherano was too conservative against some of the sides, possibly the reasons why some poor draws occurred.

I wonder how well Alonso, Mascherano and Gerrard would do in the current team.

OK then, let's take that out of the equation, you still averaged 1.33 goals conceded pg with VVD compared to less than 0.8 without him.Or should I count the 3 goals conceded against Leeds as an anomaly also?

Funnily enough I never felt under real threat from Liverpool that season. We were always just ahead of them and holding them off. It wasn't nip and tuck like some of the battles we had with Arsenal for example.

United also played an insane amount of games that season. Think we could have only played one more (discounting replays).
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Hmmm. You were 1-2 down to Villa with 10 mins to go and won 3-2. You were being held by Sunderland going into the last 10 mins and won, You were 1-1 with Wigan until the 86th minute and win 1-2. All games that were won late and would have had a big impact. I get that it is what United did, but I reckon at the time, you wouldn't have felt "comfortable"
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It may be that I had more confidence in my team then (a little bit like you can be more confident of yours now). If I remember the day before the Villa game I'm sure you won last minute at Fulham (Benayoun).

Maybe my memory has played tricks on me but the advantage was never with LFC in that title race.

Away from this forum it's a great rivalrly and great for football if the two end up battling it out.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Even better if you add City into the mix.

Ultimately, City could well win their next 5 and be top going to Anfeld. A win then would put them ahead in the table with room to breath I reckon.

City's fixtures until February are pretty kind although they have a few tough games in a row after that when European football returns.

Unless we win at Anfield City could well be above us by the time we go to Fulham. I suppose a well-rested Villa could provide them a stern test next mid-week though.

It's just going to be a strange season I think with the team managing their squad the best coming out on top.

Quite possibly, but form seems to be all over the place this season - expect Liverpool to click soon.

I've just checked. It was Fulham.

I suppose it could have made a difference but at the time I'm sure I had every confidence in my team! As I said memory can play tricks though!

It does seem a little naive how little City are being spoken about considering they also go above Liverpool if they win their game in hand. On their day they are still a lot better than us but consistency seems to be an issue for them but they're doing pretty well the past few weeks.

They seem pretty defensively sound but haven't quite clicked up front. If they do they're solid favourites for me.

If, and if it's a big if, United can get 10 points from the next four games though I think that would put us in a very strong position for a real crack at it.

Yes, we won by 4 points. Had anyone of those late wins turned into defeat it could be a very nervous last game of the season. Macheda scored the vital goal against Villa. What were the odds something like that happened?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He scored the winner against Sunderland like a week later for you as well. If it wasn't for that no mark journeyman cant it could have just been a 19 year drought

Think it was more the squad outside of 15 or so players were utter gash.

Benayoun, Babel, and Keane (before he was sold) were the only decent game changers we had.

After those 3 we were relying on N'gog and El Zhar

I'm expecting a pretty cagey game in truth.

Although, it wouldn't be the biggest surprise to see you exploding from the blocks either.

I just see Klopp being a bit more cautious as usual though if you continue with your woes at CB. I think he'll rely on your quality up front to create and take the odd chance that comes along.
