It does seem a little naive how little City are being spoken about considering they also go above Liverpool if they win their game in hand. On their day they are still a lot better than us but consistency seems to be an issue for them but they're doing pretty well the past few weeks.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not really.
Most Liverpool fans understand that the real stumbling block to them retaining their title is Man City.
Although they have gone on a decent run, City still aren't great though, so if Liverpool can get over this drop in form of late, I see no reason why we can't win number 20 this season.
On the other hand though, if we have another 3 weeks or so, of a sleepwalking front 3, we might be up against it.

We're going to be under the cosh from the start, we generally don't start well in games very often and if there's one game to kick Liverpools players up the a*se it's at home to us surely.

If we ride that out I can see us causing them problems when we do break forward.

Expecting a low scoring, anti-climax of a game but one that hopefully we can nick.

One of those games though where a bit of a hammering wouldn't shock me, and I think they're more capable of giving out the hiding than we are if everything 'clicks'.

Can't wait for Sunday. 🙂
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm expecting a pretty cagey game in truth.

Although, it wouldn't be the biggest surprise to see you exploding from the blocks either.

I just see Klopp being a bit more cautious as usual though if you continue with your woes at CB. I think he'll rely on your quality up front to create and take the odd chance that comes along.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm not.
I think Liverpool will come out all guns blazing.

Hopefully you come at us with a high press and a high back line as a result, we'll do well to withstand it but it only takes one decent pass and our front 3 would be in, especially if your CB's are the inexperienced ones who are prone to leaving a bit of space. Most worrying for us is our inability to take these chances if they come.

It wouldn't surprise me but it also wouldn't surprise me if, after that, you settled down as well. Catching United cold wouldn't be a bad tactic I suppose.

Mike - I'd play Pogba on the left of the front three (with Fred, McT in midfield and Bruno at 10). Think he'd be useful to beat the press with a longer ball up to him. The only concern would be that he could allow TAA acres of space. I do think he could influence the game though if he 'cheats' a bit and maybe it would be a case of Fred patrolling that side when United don't have the ball.

Remember Liverpool signed Robbie Keane that season and couldn't fit him in? Weird signing.

I remember this, much was made of that transfer, but he never shone at Liverpool

Was talking about this season with someone on here the other day. A lot of united fans say they were always comfortable that season and for a good while they were. However we beat them at old trafford, they then went to fulham and lost and then in the next game were 2-1 down to villa with 10 mins to go. You cant tell me there werent nerves at that point staring a 3rd successive defeat in the face. Especially as it coincided with us going on a run where we were obliterating everyone we faced.

I think we were very unlucky that season that we came up against probably the best premier league side of all time. We gave it a good go. Far too many stupid draws at home killed us. We just never had the creative wide man that could make something happen. Kuyt on 1 wing and 1 of riera or benayoun on the other. Thats where we lacked that last touch of quality. The spine of that team though was as strong as anything we have had in prem era.

Keane actually did ok and IMO it was Raf'a not wanting him and getting shut of him that actually cost us.

Someone signed keane based of some plan or whatever and rafa went mad as he didnt get barry as well or instead and just absolutely targeted the guy.

He actually scored 7 i think before christmas, we took a 6mil loss and sold him then went and drew to wigan and boro? no strikers bar babel.

total disaster.

I mean we got caught up by hammering utd at old trafford and all of that good stuff but the damage was done with injuries to torres. IMO had he stayed fit, it was really game on.

I expect that that's how we will set up

A month ago I probably wouldn't have considered Pogba as a starter in this game but he's been much better recently so I think he will start.

Wouldn't surprise me to see James on the right and Rashford/Martial left. Not what I'd choose, but he might fancy James to help out against Robertson and Mane.

That wouldn't be a shock either. I think it depends on what we see as a priority. Winning, or not losing. I just think we need an 'out' early doors and Pogba would allow us that. We got great success at Anfield in 2015 with Fellaini playing that role towards left midfield. That's probably our best ever performance at Anfield that I can remember!

Getting a lot of pundits, Murphy being the latest saying there's been 'no better time' to go to Anfield, just all points to them giving us a drubbing in my pessimistic mind

Also, there were easier times to go to Anfield back when they were a lot shiiiitter and we were a lot better.

I suppose there is some truth in that they have not been in great form and are missing a few defenders. However, they're still very capable of giving us a hiding I'm sure!

The crowd not being there though may be a small factor though. I've felt before, even with SAF, we've let it get to us at times.

I feel like this is exactly the sort of game Klopp relishes even if he has seemed a bit rattled recently. But the big issue which will frustrate him is how weak his defence is right now. Both defenses are a bit suspect and I think it'll go down to which attack is more ruthless.

I still make Liverpool favourites as, apart from their issues at CB, they have the rest of their first XI available I believe. I do think they miss Fabinho in midfield when they play him at CB though. Even though he's looked good there too when he's played there.

posted on 15/1/21

I think Fabinho not in midfield is a huge loss for them, he really is important to how they operate, it'll be intersting to see how Thiago does for them when he's back fit. They are favourites because they are the better team and have a brilliant home record but they're not in great form and I think we have a chance. I think a lot depends on how much Klopp can get them motivated for the game, it's probably his strongest attribute as a manager.

The interesting factors for this game are varied imo.

Anfield with no crowd... good or bad thing? Usually a bad thing, but given their respective form, arguably Liverpool may benefit from not having that pressure and anxiety that can creep in.

Then there's how United set up. Do they contain, or do they smell blood and go for the win? Both have potential issues and hindsight will be the judge of what was the right approach.

Also, team selection for United - Pogba in good form but most people agree that a CM that has Bruno and Pogba in will probably get overrun against Liverpool.

Fascinating game and I will be feeling pessimistic beforehand no doubt - although it still feels like we're in bonus territory as no one expected us to be in this position anyway.

Was the 2009 title the record equalling 18th title? I think it was. Makes it even more funny that Liverpool were their closest challengers that year.

So if united keep this form up and we get our act together, the 2 (along with city) tussle for the title and we end up nicking it, will that be really funny as it will be a record equalling 20th?
