This could be the game Thiago really announces his arrival in the PL too and runs the show. Hopefully without Fabinho around him dominating the centre of the park McT and Fred can get about and break up play well.

He had a stinker at Southampton. Hopefully he has another.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Hopefully. Should be properly fit now though.

Would be a boost for us if they go with Henderson at CB to partner Fabinho, they miss him in midfield. Although I'd be happy seeing Rashford really testing one of their younger CB's.

I wouldn't be surprised if Matip ends up being back to start though.

Always nervous before these games. But it's different than it was in the SAF days. Then, we were always expected to win and there was a fear we'd mess it up. Whereas now, we'll still very much be underdogs, so it's just hoping we can get a result that wouldn't necessarily be expected

Hopefully Nat Philips has to start. Makes Harry Maguire look like Usain Bolt.

Always the game I look forward to the most and enjoy the least just because of the tension.

This year I’m nervous. The unbeaten run means nothing to me but 6 points would be a big gap.

If Matip plays then I’d be cautiously optimistic (our current form doesn’t really allow for more) but without him I’m seriously concerned. We’d be vulnerable to both pace (Rashford and Martial) and intelligent runs (Cavani and Bruno).

We’ll almost certainly concede, I just have to hope Salah and Mane have remembered where the goal is.

He was probably our best player. That's not saying a whole lot because we were poor, but he did ok.

Our next 7 in the league after Liverpool:

Fulham a
Sheff United h
Arsenal a
Saints h
Everton h
West Brom a
Newcastle h

Liverpool’s next 7

Burnley h
Spurs a
West Ham a
Brighton h
Man City h
Leicester a
Everton h

I’ve chosen 7 cos we play Chelsea and City away back to back after those. Regardless of the result Sunday I wouldn’t be shocked if we are ahead of Liverpool after that run with their away form.

City are obviously a problem also though.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Take a look at City’s run now, scary 😟
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Very easy run before they have to go to Anfield.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes they have an easy run. Then they have Liverpool,, Spurs, Arsenal, West Ham and then the derby.

If we can keep ahead/within touching distance over the next 5 games, things could be very interesting mid-Feb early March time.

I am very relaxed about it because I think winning on Tuesday puts a lot more pressure on Liverpool. If we win we go 6 points ahead (and city likely 5 ahead) which they really can’t afford even this season. A draw and it’s status quo, although a big help to city, and even if we lose we stay level. So am not overly worried. As others have said I think another other than a Liverpool win and city become huge huge favourites for the league and given their fixtures over the next month could be away and gone by end of February.
Also just on Thiago, he is a lovely footballer and one I love to watch play, the way he takes the ball and gives it and moves, it great to watch (like a slightly more attack Carrick IMO) BUT, am not sure he’s right for Liverpool. While he was obviously bought to add a little creativity to a hard working midfield, and I can see why, I think when he plays Liverpool lose some of what made them so good, the relentless intensity from the middle to the forwards, both in and out of possession. I definitely wouldn’t say he makes them worse as he adds great quality but just maybe a little easier to play against.

You do make a lot of these ridiculous predictions that don't come true.

United will score, there is no way we are keeping a clean sheet. The only question is whether or not we’ll create any chances and finish the few we create. I have seen nothing in the past 3 league games that gives me any confidence of us beating Utd. I’d take a draw.

We thrive against the better sides as they tend to be a bit more adventurous

I'm more confident playing a UTD/City/Chelsea type team than a westbrom/spurs/Newcastle type team who literally park the bus

I hate and love the 2 games every season against United in equal measure.

They are the ones I want to win the most and really dont want to lose either. (Stating the obvious I know).

Nervous etc, no not a bit. Ultimately it is only a game of football and I dont take it that seriously anyway.

I hope its a good game (and we win) and afterwards it is not some VAR farce or the like that is being discussed but the quality of the game instead.

Honestly, I'm expecting Liverpool to win this one 2-0/2-1. I think the pressure might get to our lads in the first half, and if we start like we did against Burnley I see us going a goal down early on and not recovering.

I think they edge it on paper, even with VVD out, and Klopp will have them fired up, whereas I expect Ole to set up for the draw/nick a goal on the counter, which i don't think will work.

posted on 15/1/21

I reckon Ole will surprise Klopp and try and destroy Liverpool in the first half. They will expect us to park the bus early on but we could catch them cold.

Looking forward to this one.

I think it will boil down to who takes their chances. I think we will get at them but our finishing ahsnt been clinical.

Think they will win but only because I think they will put the ball in the net with chances they get. We may well have the better chances but finishing will be the issue.

Hope I'm wrong and we have our finishing boots on.

The stakes are the highest in this game - there isn't another fixture where the gap between the pain of losing and the joy of winning is so large. E.g. in the 2008 CL semi-finals if I remember correctly we qualified first and had to wait to see who came through the other semi-final out of Chelsea and Liverpool would meet us in the final. That Chelsea side were really good and I saw our chances as no better than 50-50 against them; clearly we had a better chance against Liverpool. But I still wanted Chelsea in the final, because the prospect of losing a CL final against Liverpool was too awful to countenance.

Really no idea what to expect this weekend. To stay at the top of the division we need to play better than we have in our unbeaten run, and the same goes for our hopes of winning at Anfield.

posted on 15/1/21

Our best finishers will probably start on the bench, Cavani and Greenwood. But Rashford is more key to how we'll play I'm guessing.

posted on 15/1/21

Actually was forgetting Martial could be out, maybe Cavani will start with Rashford on the right again, and Pogba to the left (and McFred in CM behind Bruno).
