This no hugging nonsense

I thought this was a Brexit thing. We're not Continental. We don't go in for displays of affection, and those Brussels Bureaucrats can't make us anymore.

I think it makes complete sense. Hugging is not an essential part of the game so during a viral pandemic, I think it’s sensible to stop the things.

It’s hardly a massive imposition to not hug people for a few football matches until we’ve got it under control.

When you think that football and rugby are allowed under these protocols it is a bit silly. I think it's more to do with the example it sets

Considering they are regularly tested and are in physical contact with their team mates virtually every single day, I don’t really see the danger of hugging your fellow team mates as well. Are there scientists who are actually claiming this is an issue that doesn’t exist with other contact within the game?

If it’s really an issue then shouldn’t they actually think about stopping football all together?

Also, will the new border restrictions have any impact on footballers travelling abroad?

It's all for show, read yesterday a footballer saying they sit on a plane together, are all in the changing room together when they shower and get changed but they have to travel to the game in 3 seperate coaches. In a game they're tackling and fighting for aerial balls, opposition players putting hands on each other when there's fouls etc. The no hugging thing is because some people are crying about how footballers can hug each other when they can't hug their family, not for any safely protocols.

I think if it can even make a small difference, it should be banned. Having said that, the virus doesn't seem to spread nearly as easily outside as indoors. And if players aren't infecting opponents by marking them for long periods of games, it's unlikely that a brief hug would have any impact. Better safe than sorry though

Its a load of krap really.

Makes me laugh. Managers can't shake hands but touch elbows and then follow it up with a quick whisper in the ear or hug.

What's way weirder is the celebrations when there is no crowd. I can see why you would run to the crowd with joy but the whole running to the camera and knee slide to an empty stadium tickles me.

Too much hugging and kissing these days.

Players should celebrate by just giving each other a nod of approval.

It’s absolutely absurd and there’s no science behind it... it’s entirely how it looks, PR etc.

Oh and not to mention, the government love a narrative that involve blaming football for things.

Very Thatcher esque

Football should not be suspended in any way. Things are boring enough right now.

True. Though I think this govt would rather blame everyone than themselves. They even attributed pretty much the entire rise in cases to the new variant, and not the slapdash manner in which they toyed with restriction levels

Aye it’s just PC brigade crying to Ofcom. I hope players ignore it tbh

It's more just a message type thing, a little token gesture not to hug at the moment.

If they were going by the science then they'd be not playing at all or at least socially distance the whole time on the pitch.

Fair points made. Yes, does seem more to do with optics.
However, Wilder should’ve reigned himself in a little, chose his words a little different.
Sensitive times and all that..

That’d be an interesting game to watch.

They didn't hug anyway in the dark ages when I started playing. A pat on the back did it, and much better too, nobody got covid then.

Everyone is influenced by the media... although some more easily than others.

Generally those with a binary view, in my experience.

We used to book out a full 11 aside pitch every week and sometimes only get numbers for 5 aside (occasionally we didn't shrink the pitch), it achieved something close
