I suspect he thought he might be able to get old Bale to show up (i thought he would) now he's lost faith in that happening because his desire isn't what it was and is giving up on him.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So he’d not been paying attention to Bale NOT playing for a year?
If most of us could see Bale would come with a ton of baggage, it seems absurd that Jose couldn’t?

Bale deffo a trophy signing as a number of us said. My last hope with this is that Jose feels he hasn’t got the physicality to play PL footy week in week out anymore, but he might utilise him in the FA and, especially, the Europa League if we are to have a serious tilt at it. Bale is a seasoned CL winner with genuine euro pedigree, so maybe there is that as an option. He’s never gonna be a first teamer in our PL campaign tho.
Shocking to me to see the likes of Sissoko and Gedson on the bench yesterday while Jose ostracises Dele and Winks. Toby situation is interesting too, he’s been excellent this season, yet dropped for the last two PL games after playing against Marine. I mean wtf is that about?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So many questions!
About the sit back thing, it happened in every club he managed since he left Real. He might not tell the players to sit back directly, but must be something to do with his style.
I think it's down to the way he easily blames the attacking players for not covering his defense. I remember Martial was criticised for a goal we conceded, then it went sour with him and Mourinho. Gradually, the players become unwillingly to press higher in the pitch.

He doesn’t say it, but he wants it!
There is no effort to even try and get Bale fitter by putting him on the pitch, even though he has more goals than Bergwjin in a fraction of the minutes on the pitch.
It all boils down to Mourinho`s need to protect his dodgy defence, he needs his forwards to get up and down the pitch to help out defensively, and Lamela, Lucas and Bergwjin are better at that than Bale or Dele. Dele and Bale are better footballers and will score and assist more goals, but that`s not Mourinho`s priority.
One positive from yesterday, hopefully Mourinho has realized the negative impact Sissoko has on our ability to play football, it was clear that we were so much better at moving the ball without him.
think Jose thinks if you go ahead under whatever circumstances you should hold on to it and any goal you let in is a defensive error.
It feels like Mourinho is suffering fools less gladly as he gets older. Back when he was at Chelsea for the first time it seemed as if he was trying to be everyone's mate. Now he's happy to alienate people from the team for the sake of success. So yeah, I don't disbelieve that Bale news and I wouldn't be surprised if it was a Levy signing and Jose just went with it.
Even if he hasn't been keen on him in training or whatever, I still think he could give him a few minutes when we're needing a goal. It's as if he isn't out of pure stubbornness.
As for the second news, I believe Jose is telling the truth but after the West Ham result he must have got into the team to tighten up the defence. I think it was an approach he was instilling in them and it's now stuck with them through habit perhaps. We have to remember there were some performances like this last season too. The players should take responsibility also but Mourinho definitely played his part in it. Doesn't help when he is making negative subs either as if to simply protect a narrow lead.
I said in the match thread - I wonder if it’s a fitness issue.
Ole said when he joined Manchester United that the team were unfit.
So, maybe that explains why we come out of the blocks early, scoring so many goals in the first 20, but then can’t sustain it in the second half and drop deep - they are physically not capable.
Which is on Jose

Very strange how this team has got lazier and lazier first under Poch and continued under Mourinho. Covid has a bit to do with it as even Man City have reduced the high press Liverpool to. It will get to the point where the players cant even be bothered to come out for the second half
The negative one is banking on Kane and Son scoring 99 percent of our goals this season.

This
The Bale situation is vintage Levy, the time to push the boat out and bring him back was 2 or 3 years ago when we needed that x factor player to help get us over the line to win a trophy.
Instead he waits until we have an unsuitable manager to get the best out of him, brings him back unfit and on the decline.

Plenty of players have had long spells sat on the bench/not playing much. The issue with Bale is clearly one of physical decline, lack of application, or both. I don't think Mourinho can be fairly blamed for this one - there was every reason to believe Bale could rediscover some sort of form. It's not like he's especially old.

At spurs we don't
At the same time, how is Bale ever supposed to get properly fit and look like the Bale of old if he never gets much game time?
I do think some fans have been harsh on him as well, already dismissing him and not giving him much of a chance in the way Ndombele had been given one.
