I think Labour has to win next time after the mess the Tories have made, plus Starmer is positioning himself to the centre to win back old Labour voters.

Starmer doing it right. Piling on during a pandemic where people are dying won't endear him. He's been one step ahead of them in terms of what he would do for 6 months and that's all money in the bank.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
To win election, Starmer needs votes from left Labour supporters. It cam be tricky especially after he booted Jeremy Corbyn. If the lefts stay at home or move to other party, we’re in for another Tory government.
It’s a sign of just how badly Labour have been managed, and how average Starmer is, that they’re barely ahead in the polls after this long of a Tory government and this degree of a sheiteshow, with Brexit and Covid.
A successful vaccine rollout might save Johnson as well.

The thing is, the Tories get away with lying - systematically - and messing things up with impunity because a large proportion of the media actively propagandises on their behalf and ignores the scandals, while the broadcasters, committed to being seen to be neutral, are terrified of calling them out. The BBC actually revealed they had an editorial policy of not using the word 'lie' when the PM said something untrue.
Essentially, the Tories get to play politics on cheat mode.

I often wonder why highly educated people in public positions do and say really stupid things. Sometimes it's playing dumb. You see that anti-intellectualism when a political culture is experiencing a populist ebb. But sometimes I think you have individuals who smart in a certain way but also very lacking in emotional intelligence or intellectual curiosity, or are lazy when it comes to detail that isn't instrumental to consolidating power.
I can't claim to know Priti Patel's mind but she certainly wasn't acting smart when she, e.g. boasted about the decline in shoplifting during the first lockdown.

Dont say daft stuff mate.
He clearly isn't average. He is far more intelligent and clever than any front bench Tory MP.
He has a massive job to do to move Labour back to the acceptable centre left of UK politics, with not much like minded talent in the parliamentary labour party round him. Especially with Boris and Co delivering a brexit with a trade deal.
Hes on a long road (a bit like Ole really) but he will become PM one day.

I think it qualifies your point though. Had Labour presided over the last year, they would have been pilloried and would be miles behind the Tories in the polls. Meanwhile, Starmer has to tread a very careful path. Too aggressive and he gets accused of playing politics during a national disaster. Too hard on Brexit failings and he alienates Leave voters who need to be tempted back. Not enough and he disappoints Remainers. There's no silver bullet approach to winning a decisive lead in this context, in this very tribal political moment and with such media headwinds. Which isn't to say Starmer couldn't do certain things better.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah, in the workplace over the years I’ve seen very highly intelligent and well-educated people say really quite ridiculous things: civil servants, professionals, businessmen and women, technocrats and execs amongst them.
There are the brainfart blunders, which come from a propensity to speak about matters that people don’t fully understand, pressure situations, inadequate briefing, misremembering, poor choice of language, etc. These can sit on judgment anywhere between perfectly forgivable slips of the tongue to ridiculous doubled-down on bravado or speculation. Mostly pretty harmless, mostly pretty amusing, mostly come from people who haven’t made it right to the top level in any given professional/business environment.
Then there are the strategic blunders, like your poor PR strategy/failure to ‘read the room’, clumsy dismissals and downplaying, and good old fashioned hoodwink attempts gone wrong. This is firmly Boris-era Tories territory.
Then there are distractionary manufactured blunders. Dead cats on table stuff, conjured by only the most despicably Machiavellian of politicians and strategists.
The blunder is a fascinating subject.
“Individuals who are smart in a certain way... but very lacking in intellectual curiosity” defines BoJo perfectly, by the way.
Hope you’re right. Most of hard left labour streams I follow are pretty much done with Starmer.

I wouldn’t argue that Patel is “thick” in the slightest. Anyone who has read her writing and her CV would understand that she’s a highly intelligent and very well educated woman, like Abbott.
There are genius level narcissists and psychopaths who demonstrate the behaviour and traits I referenced in the OP: incompetency in managing or commenting on affairs outside their immediate self-interest, lying compulsively, bullying, displaying grandiose self-satisfaction, and callousness.
In short, it is (more than very) possible to be both highly intelligent and an unempathetic, self-interested, arrogant, singleminded, superior caaaaaaaant.

I wonder if some of them are still around because Boris is employing a ‘friends close, enemies closer’ tactic.
Gove and Patel are obvious candidates.
Although Gove is more of a backstabber than Patel. Patel would want to stab you in the abdomen up close and face-to-face to enjoy the writhing agony she’d delivered and ensure she didn’t miss the moment the final spark of life left your eyes.

Most left wingers would still vote for Labour. Some of the hardcore far lefties might not but there's not many of them. They need to win back the centre ground and middle England to win an election. Starmer is going back to Tony Blair style leadership.

Hope you’re right. Most of hard left labour streams I follow are pretty much done with Starmer.

Imagine the stick abbot would have got from our fascist rag newspapers.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So she should. The thick useless caaant that she is
----------------------------------------------------------------------
She has a degree from Newnham College.
Whatever else you might want to label her, she clearly isn’t “thick”.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Half the Tory cabinet graduated from top uni's but you are calling them thick
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I haven’t called any of them thick.

Seems to be a prerequisite to be in this Tory cabinet.
