Half season(pretty much) awards

Agree with almost all that although i would say that Doherty has been our worst player. Defending is poor, lacks pace and hasnt made much impression in attack. Gives the ball away a lot with sloppy passes. Looks a bit like a rabbit in headlights. He's been a huge disappointment.

I had great expectations for Bergy before the season started but it hasnt quite worked out for him although some decent performances, not helped by injuries. If he could just get a goal i think his confidence would soar .

I agree with most of these.
Think Gio has been a disappointment turning out to be another Lamela.
There is a good player but always injured it seems.

I love Ndombele. Top, top player. I think he'll be world class.

A good summary except it should be Jose 1/10 for reasons I explained to you at the weekend

This. Gio my biggest disappointment, as I expected so much more from him. Hasn’t particularly been a great signing if I’m going to be honest.

Don’t think I’ve listen to that one. It was a rubbish first half and a atrocious second one.

Chelsea is probably my most disappointing one even though we got a point as we just didn’t try to beat them ( which I think we would’ve. )

Don’t forget Leicester at home what a load of disjointed rubbish that was

Doherty, Lucas and Hart have probably been the worst performers - which all things considering it’s too bad - I don’t think we have anyone who has been calamitous.

However, outside of PEH, Kane, Son and NDombele, there is a hell of a lot of “meh”.

Which pretty much sums us up for the most part “meh”.

I’d even say Aurier hasn’t been spectacular, and while Reggie started strongly I think he’s gone backwards since Palace - raised it against Fulham again, so maybe he’s been better than the others, just.

I think we can expect Reggie to be a bit up and down. Still young and new to the league.

Think I agree with it all.

Best performances for me either Utd game or Newcastle draw which we were insanely dominant but BS meant we were a draw

posted on 19/1/21

Yeah agree with most of this. I think the performance
and result against Antwerp was pretty shocking. But West Ham was more gutting. Either that or the ridiculous decision that cost us a couple of points against Newcastle.

yeah Newcastle was a fantastic performance but very wasteful.

West Ham game i felt so bad after cause felt we had done so well in general up to that game and with 10 mins to go to fack it like that in a derby. I saw some poor performances happening after that result too which we got but got away with some narrow wins, which set us up nicely for a difficult run which we started well anyway.

the reaction after the Newcastle result was brilliant too for the games in quick succession that followed.

Re the Leicester loss, first half we were bad but they didnt do much either, both teams poor and we gifted them the lead at such a bad time. Second half was horrific but we have seen plenty of those halves.

Everton we made them look so much better than they are, don't get me wrong they have improved and were good on the day but they were first to everything and better all over the park. Considering they put in 3 or 4 new signings for their first starts as well.

Good article and I agree with most of it. I also don't think Doherty has been quite as bad as people have made out.

I like him, I think there is a player there.

Best player?
Kane

Worst player?
Sanchez, Lucas

Most improved player?
Ndombele is up there; I don’t think he’s improved so much as rediscovered what he was capable of prior to coming to England. It’s an adaptation thing as much as an improvement thing. I think Hugo actually deserves a shout here - he was becoming something of a clown but since coming back from the broken arm he has been rock solid, ironed the errors out of his game again.

Disappointing player?
GLC. Clearly has the technical ability, engine and intelligence, but the stop-start nature of his season is so frustrating, in danger of going the Lamela route.

Best overall team performance?
City and Arsenal games. Both very similar - suckered them in and done them with our clinical countering, reduced them both to pointless possession and hopeful crosses which our defenses easily dealt with. Games where Jose got it spot on.

Best result?
1-6 at Old Trafford is gonna be any teams result of the season, regardless of how poor they were.

Best goal?
Son vs Arsenal

Worst performance?
Everton the worst, over 90 minutes. That was absolutely diabolical. Unthinkable that we’d be top of the league a month later after that game. The Wolves game is a close second though, disgraceful performance and tactics.

Worst result?
Palace. I’m still fuming about that game even now. We were top, others around us had lost, it was an opportunity to consolidate 1st spot and go into the Liverpool game as outright leaders and, also, to show that we’d established a stronger mentality and were able to punish rivals for dropping points. And what did we get? The first in a series of pathetic, negative performances where we tried and failed to cling onto the finest of margins instead of using the talent at our disposal to put weaker teams to the sword. That game was the catalyst for the downturn in form that has followed, and proved that nothing had really changed.

Best signing?
Hojbjerg, easily, all explained in my article about him so won’t rehash it’s here.

Worst signing?
Bale. Doesn’t have the legs or instinct to defend the way Jose wants our forwards to, and as such is a luxury player and exactly the type of player Jose casts aside in favour of industrious workhorses. So why facking sign him in the first place? Said it was a waste of time when the rumours were circulating. Pointless vanity signing.

Overall rating at this stage - 7/10
On paper we’d definitely have taken the current situation. League Cup finalists, 6-1 at OT, wins over Arsenal and City, 5 points off top and KO’s of the Europa. But, you have to apply context to any story and the reality is our league form is on the slide while the likes of Utd, City, Leicester and now even Arsenal are on the rise. Our performances have largely been diabolical, save for Newcastle (which we didn’t win), a half each against Saints and WHU and the Utd game. The propensity to throw away points is only marginally less alarming than the failure to address it. Good players are being ostracised at the club while garbage like Sissoko and Gedson are in matchday squads. We are over reliant on two players being utterly clinical, and have no plan B. The LC final was achieved via a bye and wins over Stoke & Brentford, hardly anything to get too fired up about. But most frustratingly we have peed away points (10 from winning positions) in a league that is there for the taking and, in all likelihood, blown our chances of being able to compete for it.

Jose rating - 6/10
Too many things to mention here and don’t wanna rehash things I’ve said elsewhere. We are apparently 8 points better off now than we were after this many games last season which, given how badly we started last season (bad enough for Poch to get sacked) and the fact Jose has had 15 months and two transfer windows, is really no great shakes. I said when Levy sacked Poch he had to live and die by that decision as it was such a monumental decision. So far, I really don’t see that it was worth it. I would rather Poch, or a Nagelsmaan or Ten Hag, was working with this group of players.

Agree with most of this. It's a weird one where a season can feel so much like a 3/10 when actually the results are (on the whole, and compared to other sides) decent. The Mourinho Effect

Definitely feels like it'll only take a bad couple of weeks for those ratings to be chopped in half. The "decent season on paper and ignoring context" is very tenuous.

Spurs are a work in progress, a team in development.

Its a case of facing issues and addressing them.

In the early season we were too open, then we tightened up through a run of tough fixtures, then we have struggeld to find the balance between both.

What do people expect? perfection and entertainment.?

We will see in this next phase whether we can start to bring it all together, learning when to be defensive, when to keep the intensity up, and how to better manage games.

People have to keep in mind that Jose has been here less time than OGS at Utd, Rodgers at Leicester and about the same as Arteta at Arsenal, and obvs less than Pep & Klopp. There's a couple positions on the team that need improving but overall we are in decent position, with clear areas to improve in. 8/10 for me so far for Jose.

Whether we are able to make the next step in the second half of the season will, for me, determine whether i think we can progress under Jose to the heigjhts. This will not be determined solely by if we win a cup or not.
