I tend to keep a 3L box of Zinfandel on the kitchen countertop. For cooking and emergencies
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Predator zinfandel was the best Zinfandel I've ever tasted. They let a little bit oxygen into it and the bacteria creates a VERY smoky wine. It's is phenomenal. Think the vineyard may have gone to the wall though
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It all sounded so promising until the last sentence
----------------------------------------------------------------------
u tried ur local Mass. wines Manfrom?

we did a tour of the CT vineyards last summer n they were surprisingly good. a little on the sweet side but i dont mind that.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
One or two, but yeah quite sweet, have a mate that brings a bottle of cranberry wine do thanksgiving each year. Awful stuff.

Some of the local ciders from the farms round our way are pretty good though

Malbec is a little overrated for me. I like it but sometimes it's a bit meh, like a merlot. I guess it depends on the bottle but I find a Rioja has a bit more fire in its belly

Aye I think I’m level with Barcelona.

You wouldn’t know it with a foot of snow everywhere.

My wife is too. It's a very sweet easy drinker. I'm assuming it is back sweetened
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Jammy has hints of chocolate and of course jam so yes very sweet.

The lindermans was on at £5.50 a bottle recently in our local co-op absolute bargain.

The problem is, I don't really go out of my way to buy wine specifically as I do for scotch or beer. I can go for months without buying a new bottle of red/white if I don't crave a certain main dish / wine combination.

Also where I live there are not many local 'indie' (independent, but not small) liquor stores left. The additional services they tend to offer (tasting, variety/niche wines) doesn't really add much value to me. Nowadays you can mail order a selection of niche wines from your lazy chair if you want excitement/surprises.
However I do like to browse liquor stores when on holiday. Had some amazing experiences in Turin with local specialties (Barbera, Barolo, some desert wines)

This one is my go to for fancy dinners, Rapt:

I haven’t met anyone who likes Alentejo who doesn’t love that one.

Have you ever tried any wines with the Algarvean Negra Mole grape?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not to my knowledge. I was in Olhaõ in the summer and drank a lot of local wine so it’s possible I’ve had a drop.

Where do you live in Portugal?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah, Continente do mega sales per-Christmas every year. FACKING LOVE IT!

I’m in the Western Algarve.

The Negra Mole is magic. Intense blackberry and black current flavours. There’s a vineyard called Quinta do Outeiro (Paxá wines) not miles from here which do a decent one, as do Cabrita.

Hold on...

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Nice one Rosso. I'll keep an eye out for that.

Hopefully I can drive down to the Algarve in the summer. Loved Olhaõ. If you ever go I would definitely recommend Vai e Volta for the fish. Awesome place.

I am in Lisbon myself.

I go to the liquor store and ask for a 40 in a paper bag so I can drink it on the sidewalk.

I agree with what you're saying. When I lived in London i'd always buy my beer and spirits from my local off licence, mainly due to the amount of craft beer the fella stocked.
Wine seems to really expensive though and you're always getting good offers and deals from the supermarkets.

Yes, for example they would sell a bottle of Hardy for £8 when you could get one in Tesco Metro for £4-5.

Casillero de Diablo aint that bad

Anybody like Port?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Yes. Lived in Portugal for a while. Loved a bottle of Ferreira or Offley, especially tawny. Visited a couple of the port wine lodges in Porto.

Actually quite enjoying sherry at the moment!

----------------------------------------------------------------------

I’ve also enjoyed Sherry of late

In recent decades, it was thought by many to be a ladies drink or grandma’s tipple but on the continent, it’s quite popular amongst men.

One of my favourite drinks of late is a horses neck. A fine cognac, slice of lemon, some ice, ginger ale. Great digestive too so always nice after a full meal and a few glasses of red.

OP

I can thoroughly recommend Aldi's Rioja (Baron Amarillo) it has an orange label

Best £5:50 you'll spend on a bottle of wine..
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Oh yes. Had that several times. Quite a rustic flavour if I recall.

One of the more recent ALDI reds I bought was a Hardy’s Chapter and Verse Shiraz. I was very impressed.

Nero d'Avola is a nice red from Sicily. They tend to drink it on the cool/chilled side in Italy.

Aldi do one and Sainsbury's uses to but not been there for ages.
